One has to wonder why he was so arrogant to think he could make the problem go away by suing when there was a surplus of witnesses. He might have been able to save his job with a well timed apology and some humility, but he chose to double down on a losing hand.

I totally agree. I suspect that he could even have gotten away with doing nothing and it likely would have gone away. I have seen managers behave much worse and nothing came of it because of unwritten rule of not talking about what happened the night before. The worst that likely would have happened is some snickers behind his back. He chose to make it a big story. And now his wife is probably wondering how many other asses he has pinched.
