I am sure all of you have seen the message popping up on your screen suggesting you download the Windows 10 for free.

I am not a computer/software expert, so ......Is it really free? Is this just a trial version? Has anyone done it?

Any suggestions/opinions?

I have tried Windows 10 and all I can say is that it is a major improvement over Windows 8.

Thanks

Yes, on my screen, I see it all the time popping up on the bottom right. I haven't downloaded it and yes, it is free to download, but at some point they may officially charge for it.

It's a full version and it's free. Well - you don't pay for it with money. Microsoft wants everyone running Windows 10 because every hacker kiddie on this planet knows how to hack the previous versions of Windows. It is free for existing Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers with a registered copy of Windows. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows-10/upgrade-to-windows-10-faq A few cravats. It doesn't work well on some computer models. Where I'm staying, there are a bunch of computers of various ages. On an old Acer, it installed easily and runs with no problems. On a 2011 HP G6, the owner has gone back to Windows 7. Windows 10 was difficult to install and rebooted several times a day - usually when he was in the middle of something. On a 2013 Lenovo, Windows 10 installed on the second attempt and runs well now.

You should investigate the proper answers during setup so that your privacy isn't too badly violated. The defaults are basically "let us track your every breath and feed you ads based on every click you make" it takes a little work to shut down most of the tracking. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2971...our-privacy-in-windows-10-piece-by-piece.html
http://arstechnica.com/information-...-much-privacy-by-default-heres-how-to-fix-it/

Windows 10 is faster than Windows 7 on the same computer. It's also a lot more secure once you have shut down most of the MS Tracking. If you run an anti-virus or anti-malware program in the background - - uninstall it before letting Windows 10 install. Windows defender works just fine (MS free Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware) Windows 10 really doesn't like Spybot S&D and doesn't co-exist well with most of the programs that were practically essential on Windows 7. I have Windows Defender running in the background and have MalwareBytes (free version) installed so that I can run it when a place I've visited is popping pop overs and pop unders up on my screen. Nobody has successfully infected me since I set that up.

The single most important thing is to never explore the Internet in an Administrative Login. Set up a Standard Login and use it when not upgrading or installing a new program. If you always use a default Administrative Login, you will be a Zombie sending spam to the world in the first hour.

Second most important thing is to install over an existing copy of Windows 7/8/8.1 especially if your computer has a DVD drive and you want to continue watching DVDs on your computer. You have to buy a DVD player if you do a "clean" installation of Windows 10.

I've updated my old window 7 pc to windows 10. So far it's ok except one of my video drivers isn't working properly. Ever once in a while the display freezes and I have to do a hard reboot.

you need to uninstall all hardware drivers then reinstall the latest ones after upgrade.

Windows 10 is free. Do not install unless your computer is new or has no issues. As always upgrades bring more issues then solves them. I have heard stories of people just clicking install and their computer not working properly or just dying altogether. Always do fresh installs of full versions of windows or something bad will happen.

If you are running older versions of ms office, or auto CAD, or other larger older programs they will not work with Windows 10. A lot of people have learned that the hard way. At least the price of office has come down.

I guess I will just wait for a year and buy a new computer with Windows 10 on it. I was really wary of the "Free Offer" myself.

Thanks Fellas.

As many have mentioned, it is in fact free for several users. It's nothing to be concerned about, the message even appears on Microsoft's own proprietary hardware such as the surface. It's Microsoft's attempt at upgrading users of the last two operating systems to 10 so they can slowly drop support of old software, and force users onto their new line of products (which are very heavy in collecting personal data, which turns some people off).

I, personally, have stayed with Windows 7 for my own reasons, but if you don't do anything too heavy resource wise it might be worth the upgrade. Be warned that with each new operating system, comes a slightly higher minimum system requirements. If your hardware can barely handle the operating system now, I'd recommend postponing the upgrade. Otherwise, you're good to go.

Edit: Forgot to also mention, there will be a period for the next year or so where programs have trouble running on the new operating system. Depending on how technical you are, most issues will be simple enough to solve by googling and fiddling around with settings. If computers aren't your forte, waiting a year till Microsoft figures things out sounds like a good strategy. :thumb:

In Your Wildest Dreams!
It just reminds me too much of Windows ME (anyone else remember that?) to update. I waited to get a new machine for Windows 8: plan to do the same thing for 10, I guess!

(BTW jan, pa: got that rotor fixed! Car no longer sounds/feels like it's shaking itself to death! :clap2:)

Have not province
I installed Windows 10 on a 9 year old system. Intel Q6600 (2007) with 6 GB of ram. It installed and ran with no problems. However, this is a quad-core cpu, not one of those single core P4's from 2002-2005.
