It seems like the '90s and early '00s had a bunch of these types of films - Erotic Thrillers and Horror - productions going for high-brow, yet they come off as some of the funniest and cheesiest movies I've ever seen! Although, some are actually damn sexy!
These movies were influenced by the plot-oriented mainstream or underground soft-core erotic movies of the '70s and '80s, like Last Tango in Paris, The Night Porter and Emmanuelle (so it's not hardcore porn!). The plot usually involves a male anti-hero, usually a detective or journalist, who gets caught-up in a crazy scheme or a sexy secret organization (i.e. Eyes Wide Open). Or it involves a femme fatale who seduces with fatal consequences (i.e. The Last Seduction). There are also some stories that tell an encroachment on innocence (i.e. The Graduate) or a perversion with diabolic motives (i.e. Cruel Intentions). Usually they have Gina Gershon, James Spader, Jeremy Irons, Jane March... I find these to be some of the more enjoyable of the fringe movie genres, like "The-low budget-and-unintentionally-funny" horror movies and "The-white guy-in-the-hood" movies. Some of these films are actually very sexy with foxy actresses, but mostly they prelude to hilarious raunchiness.
