Hi. So my girlfriend was diagnosed with and treated for chlamydia. I've been showing symptoms too and want to get treated. Now should I go to an STI clinic and get tested for everything (she's my first and only sexual partner and got tested for everything)

Can I just go to a walk in clinic and get treated for chlamydia or will I first need to get tested first?

The hardest part of getting tested for chlamydia is gathering up the courage to walk into a clinic and announce to the receptionist why you are there. If you can get over that hurdle, the rest is easy.

Tell the doctor your symptoms. He will ask you a bunch of questions about your sex life. Don't be embarrassed, its just his job. He may ask to see your penis to see if there is any discharge from the tip. Even if there is not any discharge, if your symptoms match the disease, and especially given that your gf has been diagnosed, he will give you a small pill pack - normally 5 pills because they treat chlamydia and gonorrhea at the same time - that you will take immediately. Even before the blood tests come back, the doctor will give you those 5 pills. If you do indeed have chlamydia, you will see an improvement within hours of taking the pills. It will take 7-10 days for everything to be back to normal, but the pain of peeing will go away that very day.

The big advantage of the blood tests is to confirm if you have anything else - Hep C, HIV, etc.

GO NOW!!!! It is not a big deal - just to go any walk-in clinic, even if you have to pay the $40. Its EASY. GO NOW!! And good luck.

Typically, with chlamydia, when you know for sure you have been exposed to it, you go to any clinic, say you've been exposed to it. At that time, you are given the treatment for it, and a test is done. Later you will find out whether or not you tested positive or negative; the treatment should take place before you know, as soon as you knew you'd been exposed to it. It is highly contagious, and I think they assume any exposure will result in infection. Also, if you have it, and she's already been treated, you are just giving it back to her.

And don't judge her for having it. It is very common in young people in general, and many people carry it for a while and don't realize it.

Hi hursely

They will be able to test and treat you at the same time. The most important thing is to get the treatment. Especially since you have started getting symptoms.

Chlamydia is 100% treatable with antibiotics. There are a few different types of common antibiotics that can be used for chlamydia. These can be found at any doctor’s office or an STI clinic.

Chlamydia is a very common infection. In BC we had 11,173 cases in 2009. The reason I think it is so common is because most men and woman do not get symptoms (they feel fine) and it can stay around for awhile. It can pass from oral, vaginal and rectal sex.

At the clinic it is common for me to see chlamydia brought from a previous relationship. Both people feel fine and the chlamydia is only picked up when someone gets an STI test. This usually happens when the lady gets her annual PAP test.

Just a reminder that the PAP test is checking for cervical cancer, it does not check for STI. Many doctors will do an STI test at the same time but some do not. If you want an STI check up talk with your doctor just to make sure they do it at the same time.

Any doctor's office or STI clinic can do the tests we recommend.

Hey, thanks for all the help! I went to a walk in clinic in Richmond and got antibiotics on the spot and tested the next week. All is good.

Oddly enough I wasn't asked any questions of my history, my word was good enough and that was that.

It was good of you to post this, as it may help other guys who are nervous about getting treated, find the courage. Well done!
