I'm looking for a single bed.
I want a low-med priced, durable, semi-firm bed.

Went to Ikea and they have beds with slats.
Should buy one of those or a box spring?
Should I buy at Ikea or is there a better place?

THanks for the help.

shop around I like box springs myself and I like a harder bed. I got a great deal on a bed from Sears. It was $3000 for less than $1000!

I definitely want to pay less than $1k. At ikea I would've paid about $500.
I won't get the slats if they're squeaky!

I wouldn't get anything Ikea. You are better to buy a mixed set from Sleep Country or something. At least they are good quality.

I hear they have new beds that don't retain your body heat - that's the kind I want next! I wake up always because I'm way too hot. Has anybody else heard of these beds or was I just dreaming (during a hot, fitful sleep?)

if you don't like heat then for sure don't buy a Temperpedic (SP??). They are very hot and uncomfortable (not to mention grossly overpriced).

All I can say is splurge to the max...you will spend one third of your life in it....I did this nearly 2 years ago...kept my mattress and added a box spring...bought a monsterous queen sized oak sleigh bed....a memory foam matress topper....and 3 sets of egyptian cotton 800 thread count sheets....uber wicked sleep for me...and the gals love it.

I agree with storm rider, don't go cheap on a bed.
We bought one many years ago from Sears.
One of those pillow top matresses, the kind they show in the commercials where you drop a bowling ball on it, the person next to you doesn't feel a thing.
A good night's sleep is invaluable to me.

A mattess is one thing....the dressing is more important....to sleep within fine 800 thread count sheets is fine....the feel of them against your skin is sublime....it is luxury....wicked luxury....it is decadent and sinfull with regards to the feeling....and OH so worth it....I spent nearly $400 on my bed linen...for 3 sets of sheets as well as a quilt cover and a bunch of pillow shams that I will never need.....sliding into a freshly made bed for me is exstacy....I sleep like a baby and that alone is worth the cost I paid

Skip Ikea beds. It's best to go to a place that allows you to really test out the beds and have knowledgeable staff on hand. I find that Sleep Country has amazing beds but they are very expensive. Sears has decent beds also but their staff aren't too helpful most of the time but prices are better than Sleep Country. You don't really want to go cheap on your mattress. I found out the hard way buying a really cheap box-spring mattress and within a year the springs were aggravating my back. You want one that gives you good support.

Toss in a good mattress cover too, that seems to help. A complete bed with frame, high quality will pop you 3 grand though. It's some serious money.
I spent $1400 on the bedroom suite which included a night table and a 3 drawer dresser with a very large mirror.....the mirror got a 10 from Heidi The German Doll ;)....boxspring cost me $100 and the memory foam matress topper was another $100....$400 more on Uber fine sheets which included a quilt cover and all told it cost me 2 grand....looks fanstastic and I sleep like a baby :)
