On the news they had the ex premier Bill Vander something with 700,000 signatures with people not wanting the hst. Wouldnt that have any effect on getting rid of the hst?
no. van der zalm's campaign is to get mla's recalled (albeit on the basis of the hst) but if he ever gets enough of the mla's recalled then he has to manufacture a vote on the hst and get it passed by the legislative assembly.
the status of the recall is that van der zalm now gets access to the voters list in the 14 ridings where he signed up more than 10% of the voters. with those voters lists (which are hopelessly out of date now) he has to go out and sign up 45% of the electorate in each riding in less than 60 days. as you may or may not know, 45% is an almost impossible task in bc. in an election, less than half of the electorate will actually be convinced to vote, and of that half, usually less than 50% usually wins an election (that equals say 50% times say 43% equals something like 21.5% of elegible voters actually wins the election). To sign up 45% of the elegible voters on a petition is almost impossible. it has happened only once in 11 tries in bc
IF he actually gets enough recalls to force the assembly to dissolve and he then gets an election on this shit, many of the voters that were happy to sign the petition in protest of the cursed tax will be unwilling to see any change in the status quo for fear of the socialist hordes getting in (or worse yet whatever unholy party of malcontents and losers van der zalm puts together). in addition, the incoming party will take one look at the financial fiasco the 2010 left behind, and the secret promises that were made to the feds many, many years ago behind closed doors when the feds first agreed to helping finance the 2010, and they will immediately scuttle any plans they might have of holding a vote in the legislative assembly on the matter.
so in a nutshell, the likelihood of the hst being recalled in our lifetime is about three-quarters of nine-tenths of fuck all
