Try Tai Chi. Sort of like yoga lite meets aerobics, with a bit of the flavour of martial arts, without the pain of falling down on your bum.

Hello, I study Ving Tsung and Yang style Tai Chi.

Did you know Ving Tsung was invented by a Buddhist nun some 300 years ago? But I'd recommend you Tai Chi though as Ving Tsung training can sometimes be quite painful. Or, you may do Yoga. My sister does Yoga.

I took martial arts for 5 years. Loved it.

What is your goal? This will help to determine what is right for you.

Martial arts is not something you do to fill spare time..... it takes too much commitement for that.
Thanks for the replies, I guess I am going to check Yoga out for the heck of it, and as for Martial Arts I want to find something that really strokes the fire and ofcourse self defense.. heck even a bit of discipline never hurt me:p

Yoga

I do Bikrams yoga. Yoga done in a hot room. I go at least 4 days a week now & I have never felt better in my life. The 1st thing I look forward to doing everyday is going to yoga.

The heat takes some getting used too but there's so many added benefits. Your muscles are able to stretch more & you sweat out all the accumulated toxins.

You develope more focus, more relaxation, more determination & more joy each time you go.

Yoga stretches & strengthens your muscles giving you a very lean body, stimulates your internal organs, opens up the joints releaving arthritis, strengthens your spine & elevates your mood combating depression & anxiety.

I love YOGA :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Never done the yoga thing but did do the full, short and long form of
Traditional Yang style Tai Chi chuan. If you want the name of the
teacher PM me, he practices in Mission and apparently is the only white
male who was given permission to practice here.

Studied it for two and a half years, the most benefit I found from it as
I suffer from arthritis ( hit me when I was 30) was to make me more limber
a lot stronger in mind and body.
The absolute biggest benefit though had to be when you were feeling
frustrated or stressed out. Start your routine breathing calmly and by
the time you finished your form it was amazing how much better you felt.

It really helps clear the mind from the days stress and focuses you.
I still practice it 2-3 times a week.

Good for you Sexy BBW for wanting to take up one of these exercises you
will not be dissapointed, it can ony benefit the body and mind in many ways.

I have done Korean Hapkido for about 23 years.....it is far more than self defense.
The flexibility, strength, coordination, and mind control gained is truly incredible.

I only go on average 2 or 3 times per week now, as I find it hard to get the time to attend.
But I also gained extreme self satisfaction as I got better, and earned my belts.
When I got black, my family and friends even came to see the presentation.
I was far more proud of that achievement, than i was graduating from high school and college.
It took many years, and a lot of sweat and hard work.....but if you do it the training can change your whole life.
I competitive race mountain bikes as well, and find that bike control comes easily due to all my years of martial arts....yes, it may sound crazy, but i really find it works in other areas like that as well.
Or not panicking when something goes wrong, as the mind to is taught discipline.

Cheers :)

Is that the martial arts where they "fight" with the traditional weapons?

I would love to learn self-defense.
Can anybody recommend a short and simple way to do it?

I am thinking of things like what to do when attacked by a person stronger then you?

Hello. Forget about everything you see in The Matrix. In a real combat situation, one does not need to jump, flip or perform any of those fancy movements we see in those kung fu movies. Remember this, the shortest distance between two points is always a straight line. If a person stronger than you attacks you, try to attack the person's "central line" with a series of "chain punch". Make sure you punch straight. Don't attack his limbs but the area from between his eyes down to his groin (I wish I could draw a diagram for you.) When you punch, don't stiff your arm muscles, just relax. When you unleash a punch the other hand must already be "loading" for the next punch.

Wow. Interesting and makes a lot of sense.
Are there any courses in Vancouver to practice these things?

I don't want to study for years.
Yes, there are schools that teach this type of techniques in Vancouver.

If you only want to study this technique (chain punch), it only requires weeks. Wing Chun chain punch is like the universal solution very effective when it comes to KO your opponent. Chain punch can be very powerful but you must do it right.

I had the honour to spar with a BC registered boxer, a real pro, and no way did he hit as hard as my Wing Chun instructor or even myself, it's all in the techniques, plus, a chain punch can be very effective as it throws multiple attacks and is hard to defend against, not many martial artists can stop a chain of punches if you are in the advantagous position.

By the way, this technique was originally invented by a woman and designed for women. At the age 17, Bruce Lee used to get his butt kicked until he started learning Wing Chun, and chain punch was the first technique he learned. With this simple technique, Bruce Lee KOed his opponent within 10 seconds who was much bigger than him and had trained in martial art since very young age.

OK. I am sold on it! I wouldn't mind to take a course. Just don't want it to take years.
Where exactly could I study this technique?
Well... I see you are located in North Shore.

I supposed you can come to my school, it's located on Hastings and Boundary... I can search some other schools for you. Give me a day.

Thanks.

I've always thougth that self-defense should be mandatory for kids, especially for girls. There would be a lot less rape and abuse if bad guys would know a girl can defend herself....

Well, if I had nine lives like a cat, this would be definitely one I would spend one to fight for, but I don't unfortunately. :)

Most interesting thing is that whenever I mention this to people, it is the women who protest against it, telling me that we have enough violence, we don't want little girls to learn to fight.

It's the other way around. It would make the world a lot more peaceful place!!!
I totally and wholeheartedly agree with you that self-defense should be mandatory for kids, especially for girls.

My sister is going to go to Paris next summer as an exchange student for four months. Although I will be joining her (not as a student but just as a tourist), I won't be with her all the time since I'll be looking for my own fun in the city. Maybe I will rent a car or use trains to travel around Western Europe on my own until her semester's over.

Anyways, I am trying to convince my sister to take some self-defense lessons with me so she'll possess some skills in defending herself. But so far her answer has been a no, she rathers does Yoga and Hip Pop dancing...

Hi butter, I know the school you are talking about, the one on Commercial that is. I am talking about another school. A new one. It is with Sifu Bo. Are you a Wing Chun practitioner as well?
