Wow, it doesn't take long for the warm and fuzzies to disappear around here. Dak starts an apology thread, the chorus chimes in to commiscerate, the violins rise to a chin-trembling crescendo, and then one guy posts a counter-point and whammo, the "up yours" start flying. Guess that's the Movement of Ja People.

Dude,

Because a Band becomes mega popular they are now a sell out..?

The Peas ROCK and they are still humble and cool (from having met them last time in Vancouver..)

Why hate on them just because they are now making coin?

The last CD was a total Party from song #1 to the end..!

How can any red blooded male hate the Peas with FERGIE being involved..

I LOVE HER LUMPS! :D
anyone that knows, loves and has lived hip hop music and culture knows that they are sellouts. did any of you even know that they had two albums out and lots of underground ep's and tracks out before they added fergie t'n'a? bet none of you did.

i don't like having people that know nothing of hip hop jump on the band wagon as soon as a formally cool group adds some tits and ass to sing hooks so that all the chicks that know nothing of the music can sing with their girlfriends in a car while going out to shake their asses.

i don't like that hip hop, the true form of the music that is, not 50cent or black eyed peas bullshit has to exploit themselves or sellout to appeal to the masses of sheep that like whatever the fuck is played on the radio.

its bullshit and the peas suck some seriously sweaty asshole after shit has just come out of it.

anyone who thinks that a group that would perform a song like "my humps" and would still take themselves seriously has got to be brain dead.

Do you have an album out like they do?
Are you on any of the magazine cover like they are?
Other then your little poster under your writing looks like piece of shit to me unless you can make some serious $$ on it.

Are you jelous at them or what? They are awesome period.

I would never call anybody's art a piece of shit until they are on a cover of a magazine, and I am not.

Just my ....02 eurocents
who gives a shit if i do not drive a better car then they do? lots of people drive a better car then you do eurosabina. many of them are corporate crooks, or gang bangers or whatever. does that make them a better person then you cause they drive a better car then you????

who gives a shit about magazine covers. john gotti was on the cover of magazines, so was hitler and a bunch of other shit wads.

do me a favour and go back and listen to thier music they had out before fergie and tell me if you think the lyrics were more intelligent and the music a little more thought out.

i do not have a problem with a group or band blowing up and becoming popular and making money. k-os would be a prime example of that. he has kept his music original from day one. i remember listening to k-os in like 1989 and now i hear people saying oh did you hear that new guy k-os? which kind of makes me laugh. his music is popular and i don't hate on him, know why?

CAUSE HE'S NOT A SELLOUT!!!!!!!

one more thing. if being on the cover of a magazine or driving a fancy car or whatever else you said. if you think these are the things that make "good people" then in my opinion you need to re-evaluate your priorities in life. some people that don't have those things that i would consider more of use to society then the black eyed peas................... hmmmm well good cops, firefighters and teachers come to mind.

Could you give us a definition of "sellout", cause something tells me i don't think you know ....
They sound the same on this album as on the first one i heard from them, "Bridging the Gap", they put out one song that kinda is their "playful song" and you label them a sellout. I don't see a Black Eyed Peas tv show, cereal, or special edition riceburner Civic ...

dude if you think they sound the same now as they did on "bridging the gap" or any of their underground stuff before that studio album then you really need to listen to them again. when their first album with fergie first came out i didn't even know it was them. i thought it was destiny's child. some chic took off my beats that were being played to put on that insanely stupid "shutup" song. you didn't even really hear the dudes rappin at all. i seriously thought it was destiny's child.

the song sucked so much i said who the fuck is this? what the hell is this shit. the girl said its this new group called black eyed peas. i couldn't fucking believe it. also in terms of being a sellout i would classify it as someone that changes what they are and are not true to themselves or their original fan base in order to cash out and make money. is that not what they did? do you really think they wanted fergie in the group or did they bow out to the record company pressure????

some lyrics from their first album eludes to them asking why don't you like the peas? cause we don't wear designer clothes nor will we ever. can that be said now? no it can't. they fucking work for best buy, one of the largest corporations out there. is that not selling out?

yes i took a shot at 50cent cause he's a fucking goof. had one hot beat with lyrics that sucked and everyone thinks he's cool. women only like his music cause they think he's hot. his songs are garbage. i also really love(sarcasm) the insert on the cd with pointing a gun at you and a wall of guns and weapons behind him. great message to send to the youth. he's a sellout to. exploiting what the corporations think hip hop is to sell albums.

as for what makes me an autority on hip hop, i wouldn't really say that i am persay. however i have been listening to and living hip hop music and culture since around 1984. i did dj on vynl while i was living in niagara falls, and had many a gig in buffalo new york. for the few years i lived in toronto as a youth my family was poor for most of my upbringing and i did live on the outskirts of regent park which is the blackest of the blackest neighborhoods in toronto. i had to run from or fight many a jamiacan brother to keep my air jordans. hip hop music and culture were all around me.

let me ask you these questions. what was the first canadian hip hop artist to go multiple platnium? who is often credited with being the inventor of hip hop? what was the first single that went gold that brought hip hop to the lime light? what mainstream artist was the first to use hip hop in their songs? what hip hop album was the first to go gold?

can you answer even one of those questions without googling them? i doubt it. though i may not be an autority or a mogul, i do have long history in the music and i would say i am more knowledgable then most on the topic.

ask anyone that is in the bussiness of "real" hip hop if the think the peas are hip hop. i bet i know what the answer would be as well.

conclusion. the peas are sellouts, and they suck.

I'd like to see the payroll check if they do ... I guess you think Public Enemy also works for best buy and might be sellouts because their last cd "New Whirl Odor" was almost exclusively available at bestbuy. And yes they do sound the same from all the albums they had before fergie, just finished listening to it right now. That girl added some flavor to the band and gave them a bit of a different sound. But essentially at the core they are the same. Just a little bit of a change not much, but if they had stayed the same people like you would probably say, " Man this band sux they all sound the same as they did on their first album ... " So by expanding their sound and growing as an artist, they are sellouts ??? hmmm that just described every single artist/band/genre out there. Whatevs G ...

1. Maestro Fresh Wes
2. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
3. & 4. Run DMC & Aerosmith
5. Run DMC

I worked for awhile in the industry before losing my hearing in one of my ears and the black eyed peas weren't considered jokes or sellouts. And i think we are confusing hip hop here with rap.

The farther the black-eyed peas get from hip-hop, and into funky pop, the better. They sound fine on a dance floor now, but you can't actually listen to them as serious music, now or when they started.

There hasn't been any good hip hop SINCE Grandmaster Flash. Hip hop has ruined both soul music and funk. Take a machine beat, add a generic singer, and have some guy going "uh huh" and/or "yeah" with the beat = hip hop. Take a machine beat, have a guy talk over it = rap. Most crap you hear seems to combine the two, so no, I can't tell the difference between rap and hip hop.

Take away the friggin' computers, and pop music would be a lot better.

Good luck with that rainman. It seems the board may be undermoderated for awhile, that means lots of piles on, name calling and flaming. I think it's going to be ugly here for the next little bit :(

But if you're looking for the love, I found it in my own thread...twice! :)

i guess one out of five ain't bad. i did say i bet none of you could get one. but you proved me wrong and got one. the real answers are as follows.

1. first canadian to go platnium - maestro fresh wes.

2. the inventor of hip hop is kool dj hurk and affrikka bambataa.

3. the first single to go gold was "the message" by grandmaster flash and the furious 5 back in 1979.

4. the first mainstream artist to use hip hop in their music was the song "raptures" by blondie.

5. the first hip hop album to go gold was "liscence to ill" by the beastie boys.

but again you proved me wrong with getting one out of five.

public enemy stopped being good after "the enemy strikes black". also if you think adding fergie is a "small change" what the hell would you consider a large change. they don't sound the same at all. fergie totally dominates their songs and their sound. what she brought to the group was mainstream appeal. hip hop is not about mainstream appeal.

also if they had stayed the same i would still like them instead of disrespecting them for the sellouts they are every chance i get. they would never have even conceived of a song like the god foresaken "my hump" when they were good and money and record company pressure wasn't clouding their judgment.

the fugees are an example of growing and changing sound and at the same time not selling out. their first album was recognized by almost no one. i thought it was good though and i own the album on both vynl and cd. their second album blew up big time. i didn't hate cause they at the core stayed true to the music and lifestyle. they didn't add a hotter chick then lauryn hill to shake her ass and sing catchy little hooks so girls could shake their asses and sing a long like a fucking elementary school.

in my opinion the black eyed peas sound appeals to those that follow along with the flock. its on the radio, its on much music, everyone tells me its good so it's got to be good right?????? follow the sheep hearder.

DAK...

You are correct..

there is way too much ugliness on PERB these days so I have no interest in having a War with SMACK..

It is interesting that knowing HIP HOP History allows SOME people to believe only THEY know what sucks and what doesn't suck.....

If you don't like the Black Eyed Peas these days..
DON'T LISTEN to them!

Don't go to their concerts and don't buy their CD's but please don't tell ME that a great Band "SUCKS" just because you say they do...!

I like the PEAS for the PEAS and I don't follow ANY Flock!

and to quote the beautiful FERGI ....

simply...
.
"JUST SHUT UP..SHUT UP...SHUT UP..SHUT UP.."
You are both correct, but some people have problems and need to start wars. Or probably don't have anything better to do with their time than post on boards. :)
BTW i don't even like the peas ( i prefer hard / metal ) but still got to stand up for the artist against people who are ignorant.
That's all i got to say about that
