Were Chretien and Martin lying to Gomery?

Who was lying to the Gomery Commission on the sponsorship scandal?

Ipsos-Reid just released a poll on the Gomery inquiry commissioned by the Globe & Mail and CTV. There are some interesting results, which essentially say that most Canadians didn’t believe either Chretien or Martin when they said they had “no idea” what was going on.

A whopping 76 per cent said they disagree with the statement: "I believe former prime minister Jean Chrétien's testimony at the Gomery inquiry that he had no knowledge of the day to day decisions related to the sponsorship program."

68 % per cent disagree with the same statement about Martin.

"What it says is people don't trust the politicians to be telling the story," said Ipsos-Reid’s spokesperson. "Many people in this country believe the Prime Minister as finance minister must have known what was going on," and that many people would find it hard to believe Mr. Chrétien never asked his closest aides about the program, given that the former prime minister says he approved its creation in order to save the country.

What's your opinion?

I never thought that anything would come from this inquiry. I believe that both knew what was going on and I believe that both are corrupt enough not to have said anything. Other than spending some more taxpayers money on this inquiry what did anyone think would be accomplished?

Maybe that should have been the Ipsos Reid Poll... Is there any point to this inquiry?

You're probaly right, Hardatwork.

And the Ipsos-Reid poll did query exactly that point. They found that a majority of Canadians (61 per cent) don't believe the commission will get to the bottom of what actually happened to the millions in missing sponsorship funds.

Go figure, eh?

Right now, it's "circle the wagons time", but somebody will pay in the end. They're just looking for a scapegoat, although we all are in a sense. But the very fact that there is so much is being aired should produce some positive(?) results. Either politicians may become more weary in the future, or they may become more creative at hiding the truth from us... :)

Ouch, I see our Perb Polls now are public knowledge... Will this cause some reticence on the part of our posters here to participate in the Polls?

An old priest was dying. He sent a message for Prime Minister, Paul Martin and past Prime Minister, Jean Chretien to come to his home.

When they arrived, they were ushered up to his bedroom. As they entered the room, the clergymen held out his hands and motioned for them to sit on each side of the bed. The priest grasped their hands, sighed contentedly, smiled and stared at the ceiling.

For a time, no one said anything. Both Martin and Chretien were touched and flattered that the old priest would ask them to be with him during his final moment.

They were also puzzled because the priest had never given any indication that he particularly liked either one of them.

Finally, Chretien asked, "Fodder, what for did you hask de two of huss to come ere?"

The old priest mustered up some strength, then said weakly,

"Jesus died between two thieves, and that's how I want to go also."
