Ipsos-Reid just released a poll on the Gomery inquiry commissioned by the Globe & Mail and CTV. There are some interesting results, which essentially say that most Canadians didn’t believe either Chretien or Martin when they said they had “no idea” what was going on.
A whopping 76 per cent said they disagree with the statement: "I believe former prime minister Jean Chrétien's testimony at the Gomery inquiry that he had no knowledge of the day to day decisions related to the sponsorship program."
68 % per cent disagree with the same statement about Martin.
"What it says is people don't trust the politicians to be telling the story," said Ipsos-Reid’s spokesperson. "Many people in this country believe the Prime Minister as finance minister must have known what was going on," and that many people would find it hard to believe Mr. Chrétien never asked his closest aides about the program, given that the former prime minister says he approved its creation in order to save the country.
