The MAP Van is an overnight, mobile street outreach program that has been making a difference on the streets of Vancouver since 2004.
The MAP Van and some of the MAP Van Staff
Seven nights a week, from 10:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m., MAP Van staff drive around the city, providing compassionate support, street safety supplies, referrals to detox/treatment and other health services, juice, snacks and a place to rest for women whose lives are often characterized by stigma, poverty and trauma. They also take reports of violent and exploitative clients which are then distributed via the Red Light Alert, which WISH circulates to over 260 service providers and police precincts across the Lower Mainland
The Map Van serves over 400 individual women each year!
More information about WISH and the MAP Van can be found here: http://bit.ly/1bab06i
In 2012 alone, the MAP Van:
- Made 14,865 contacts with women
- Made 290 referrals to emergency shelter and detox
- Distributed 116,028 condoms
- Exchanged 36,174 used needles for 69,679 new ones
- Distributed 24,578 drinks and snacks
The current van has been on the road since 2004! It is in need of major repairs and purchasing a new one will allow WISH to continue to make a difference in the lives of women who are often severely isolated and do not access any other services.
Winning the Aviva Community Fund would bring WISH $30,000 closer to that dream!
Here is what women who use the MAP Van have to say about what it means to them:
"...Thanks to the ladies who make my nights just a little easier to get through. Without you, who knows what would happen to us. Thank-you to all and keep up the great work. Love & respect."
"We don't say how much we depend on you girls. Thank-you for your kindness and respect for every soul. We couldn't say 'thank-you' for everything in words."
Let's keep the MAP Van on the road! Please vote!! Thank-you so much for your support.
