The pornification of pubic hair

I'm sure this has been debated before but I really liked the writing:) From Bidisha of the UK's Guardian

Pubic hair elimination. It's a small but itchy area of contention. Last month's Elle magazine and this month's Vogue contained long, unruly articles, by Avril Mair and Rachel Johnson respectively, combing through the various strands of argument for and against total pubic purging. The hot topic for winter 2011 is clear: to bare, or not to bare one's labia?

In a sympathetic mirroring of the melting Arctic glaciers, the hair around our vaginas is fast disappearing, propelled by a force even greater than climate change: pornification. First it was a light quim-trim. Then a narrow snatch-strip. Then the full-on Brazilian, plucked pudenda, Christmas goose look. Now, technological advances mean that women will soon be able to permanently annihilate their entire chocha bush and surrounding strands, for ever. Yes ladies: laser flange is here.

Women can now expose their pipi to the breeze from now until the day they die. Great.

Why would they want to? If porn told you to jump off a cliff, would you do that too? Porn has introduced a new aesthetic – perhaps as a joke or momentary experiment – and women have responded with unquestioning servility and breezy abandon. At least now we can confront the naked truth about women's submissiveness in all its stark, raw, bald reality.

Men in porn are often also fully waxed. You can see the spring branches of their willies and their little bobbling balls, outlined in their scrota like farm eggs in a chammy cloth. But men in the non-porn world are not dedicating themselves to full deforestation, writing about it in major publications as though it's a serious consideration, or putting pressure on other men to do it. Men are not as cowed, self-hating, obedient or biddable as women in this regard. They are not going to make the effort to do anything to please a woman, at the cost of their own comfort. That is something I have always respected about men. They are busy pursuing their own happiness, leaving women to fight through the thicket of their own Stockholm syndrome, perpetually pruning their pubic hair in a desperate bid to gain approval.

Will a woman really do everything she can to meet every passing fad, even if it's uncomfortable, time-consuming, irritating, expensive, troubling, humiliating? And look at the reward: intercourse with a porn-adoring male who actually loathes women's real, naked, hairy bodies?

Are women so ashamed of their bodies' natural beauty, so unaccepting of things as they are that they will do anything at all, even if it's degrading, to get some willy time? A man who withholds his attention and affection according to the follicle count of a lady's crotch doesn't deserve intimacy with a real-life woman. A man who likes a woman without pubic hair despises adult women so much that he wants us to resemble children. He should stay at home instead in front of a computer, masturbating alone to the hair-free images he reveres.

I worry about these men too, of course, those poor poonani-policing body fascists. They are now in danger of returning to a Victorian naivety. They may well believe that, like the hairless, passive and benign feminine allegories of grand masters' paintings, women naturally do not have any body hair. Upon seeing some real hair on a real woman for the first time they may well vomit or faint, or both. That is something I'd like to see: a man so dizzied by the shortfall between reality and his own ignorance that his brain can't take it and he loses consciousness.

As for the women, don't you have anything more interesting to do than dutifully coif your cassoulet? I got "cassoulet" from The Joy of Sex, by the way. It means "general musky pussy area". Check out the original 70s hand-drawn illustrations. The couple are as hairy as anything, but they look like they're having a lot of fun, fur and all.

That was well written and gets right to the point.

I can see porn actresses and SP's baring everything, but the trend in "civilian" women shows sheep-like they are. And men who get grossed out by pubic hair are the epitome of stupid.

I've never understood the completely bare look some guys want. It seems some guys want women to look like children, but with big, fake tits. Creepy.

I think for these men it's really about the most obviously sexual part of a woman, and being able to see that clearly. For them sex=genitalia.

For me hair is sexy. It's as much a part of a woman's sexuality as any of her other parts. I'm not fixated on being able to see all the detail of her vagina clearly. But for these guys, the hair just gets in the way of the thing they are jonesing for.

That doesn't mean women should oblige them. Women should make it a bit difficult for men to get a glimpse of their twat.

Of course, I have my own reasons for advocating a healthy thatch. I just hate the idea of women getting rid of something that is so sexy for me.

Discussed this with some friends and was amazed that they said they'd be grossed out to find a woman wasn't shaved. I mean one suggested it would stop him in his tracks!! In Europe - until recently apparently - hardly anyone ever bothered - I hadn't ever encountered a shaved one until I got here.

I'm guessing no guys who feel grossed out will reply and the ladies will probably not want to say anything that may be seen as incriminating:). So I don't suppose this will create much of a discussion but thanks guys for your thoughts and - fellowship:).

And LOVED the song - gets right to the point as well.

When I was young the glimpse of women's pubes was really exciting. I wonder if the shaving had something to do with film censorship in that pubes were a no no when it came to film certification? From there actors would have become shaved and as they/the productions progressed to harder porn so the shaving thing went along with it.

The thing I find quite sad is that as the article says and Cock Throppled agrees young men these days are being programmed to accept the porn standard as the norm and that can't be right or healthy.

Nothing stinkier than a furry pussy. Bald is clean and clean is good. Licking hair hurts and swallowing pubes kills.

It's not just young men these days that consider porn the norm, but young women (11-14) as well. As "girls" fall to peer pressure and "sex" as a method to get boys to "like them" they too are going to the internet and to porn to answer their questions about sex

What they see are guys "tag teaming" women, rough anal sex, and all the things that are becoming commonplace in mainstream porn. To uninformed youth, they see this as what "sex is"

Makes me want to be 15 again, but at the end of the day, I can't imagine it's healthy for anyone...

In my day you were lucky to have a few back issues of Hustler under your matress and if you happened to have a poorly shot video you were gold...

Well Markjacob thanks for the view from the dark side but I'm not sure it has informed the discussion:) But of course you are being archly satirical - aren't you?:)

Shaving for films probably helped the view of the action and prevented the comment below about swallowing pubic hair.

Yes, it is very uncomfortable when it sticks to the back of the throat....death by pubes; there you go Agatha Christie: the perfect whodunnit.

Also, it never feels sexy to stop and fish 'em out....he he!

I was shocked when I saw my neighbours shaved kitty when we were changing. Her pussy was pretty ugly, in my opinion, and I thought to myself "that there is why we grow hair" I wasn't interested in shaving mine for a while after I saw that.

I have seen some kitties very nicely done, and, if memory serves me right someone wrote about this not long ago and pointed to some historic facts about kitty shaving, and ball shaving having occurred in the distant past.

I prefer to shave the lower lips because it feels so lovely, and, soft, and slippery when I play. However, I really like the badge of hair perched up top, and I like it on men too.

It is nice when men shave the excess hair off the cock and balls for easy licking, but, the badge on top is sexy.

Being grossed out about the sight of hair is odd. I am not a hairy person, so, adolescence was a tender time as my friends would, oh so casually, raise their arms to stretch and show off the hair growing under their pits, and, I was still bare.

Sometimes I think a small amount of hair under the pits is sexy looking too, but, then I think, maybe, no...maybe yes...when naked: yes, when wearing a short sleeve shirt: no.

A lot of clients seem to prefer the top left untrimmed....

Oh, btw, yes, the hair does hold the scent of the pussy, but, it should be a nice smell, no?

Very good point smoothmover. How would you counter that? I'm guessing that people come to be comfortable with their bodies partly by the way they are handled as children by their parents and by their Mum's in particular. I'm supposing as well that if girls grow up seeing their Mum's bodies at home hairy it is an important counter to the crap ideology. Ladies help us out here please?:)

I once had someone explain that they'd been to a meeting to discuss elementary school girls lining up outside the school washrooms to give boys blow jobs - through peer pressure! It was extraordinary.

I have heard much the same thing, something to do with different coloured rubber bands they would get from boys that they had at somepoint given head to. they were worn around their wrists like scout badges

I can only imagine what parents and teachers must of thought as they handled this situation, being from a more innocent time..

I don't have kids and I'm not having any. I'm glad I won't have to deal with any of this..

I am old enough to remember the "shaved pussies" magazines as risque and adventurous, not to mention few and far between. (pun intended) I never liked "shaving" pics any more than pics frothed with food, shaving cream, mud or anything to distract from a beautiful pussy. But then, I don't understand why girls hide their cunny with their hands, tatoos, dildos, or piercings. The same applies for nipples. Why spoil a good thing with a painful post with a dorky imitation gemstone? I feel like I am going to hurt the fine lady by massaging, licking or whatevering a synthetic post or ring. They are a distraction, not a turn-on. Tongue posts? Forget it! Maybe I am still enough of an old hippie hoping for the fine and natural, but then, I don't really like facial or underarm hair either. I have to admit, I am not fond of a hairy bush that needs a weed whip and like seeing a clean a-hole, perineum, labia and general groping area. But my fetish leads me to like fuzz between breasts, light hairs melting down to the mons, and peach fuzz above a butt crack toward the Venus Dimples drives me crazy! Some of my favorite pics are of the gap under a slightly lifted bikini showing the start of pubes ready to be explored. Too much of a good thing turns me off, but too little fails to turn me on as well. This is my first post since I joined in 2004. Appreciate all the fine advice over the years bros! Saved me many an unfortunate night. Appreciate the fine ladies far more! Thank you, all you drop dead gorgeous caregivers!

Shaving can be a bitch for men and women alike. Grows back and turns you into a human cactus. Personally, I prefer keeping things trim. Still some hair to look at, but easy to maintain and keep clean, makes oral a lot simpler. Once knew a girl with completely unkempt hair- when the panties came off, bits of lint and toilet paper could be found trapped in the bush. Absolutely horrifying.

For me it's more of a hygiene/neatness issue. If it's clean and doesn't get in the way or smell offensive or unpleasant, it's fine. Strangely enough, couple of my buddies fear female pubic hair like the plague, nevermind that they've probably never done any manscaping (or cleaning, for that matter) down there.

I thought it was just a rumour that somehow made it on the Oprah show and people believe it even though it's fake.

Anyways, as for shaving... maybe I'm not experienced enough, but I prefer not licking hair, at least not a lot of it.

Ever heard of soap and water? The (fortunately, few) really stinky pussies I've encountered have mostly been bare. The problem was that they weren't washed properly.

Oh, btw, yes, the hair does hold the scent of the pussy, but, it should be a nice smell, no?
Exactly! Guys who are put off by pubic hair are big wusses! If you gently open the labia a little before licking, you won't get any loose hairs in your mouth.

The porn I watched when I was into porn (teens, early 20's), was the furry bush porn of the 80's. I haven't watched a porno since college so I missed out on the whole bald revolution in porn. Yet, I HATE furry pussies. They are more likely to stink, and they look as gross as a hairy armpit on a woman. A clean, shorn pussy is as important to a modern woman projecting a image of herself as a clean, attractive lady, as is a clean, shorn armpit. This is ESPECIALLY true of women over a certain age (35?? 40??) whose bodies can't compete with the younger ladies as it is. If they are furry down there to boot, they may as well buy a cat, 'cause few men will want to get near her.

Wax it, ladies, its expected of you now, whether you like it or not.

love it bare

I grew up with the furry pussies on porn but when they started being bare i could never really go back to enjoying the old stuff ..
And for me who only stated having sex like 6 yrs ago and only with escorts .. Bar is all i really know and want to know ..i have see a few with a little bush but I prefer bare i just think of it being cleaner and I like to see a nice pussy ..it just me ..

I have never been a hairy guy. Light hair and not much under my arms or my privets
But after 40 yrs of growing .. there were some long hairs there ,, so i did sided if i like the women shaved ,, i should tidy up to .. So i shave my balls and shaft when needed .. and trim the top .. it just cleaner.
But i suffer the same fate as women in grown hairs

This is the stupidest thing I have ever read. You, sir, have not the faintest clue what you are talking about. Men love bush! It's a fact. Just because YOU have an opinion on something, means just YOU have an opinion. (like you would be in a position to know how all men feel) lol

I always have my gorgeous bush on top and like my punani and ass bare underneath, for the most part, but I let it all go every blue moon and love it! I have many regulars who see me because of it.

Like Rodthebod said. Clean is Clean and Dirty is Dirty, regardless if there is hair or not.

Hi Lancaster - this was in the Lower Mainland about 6 years ago.

Avery has it down about technique AND like Laurel - clean is clean and dirty is dirty, hair is secondary.

I think we - human beings are very suggestible when it comes to associating clean and dirty with things. We can develop belief systems about this stuff that have little or no basis in objective reality - like religion generally. But once you have accepted the premise it becomes so real to you that you treat as objectively true. This is fundamental to our humanity - chimps don't have belief systems or taboos. For those guys who have come to associate pubes with dirt, female pubes may as well actually be dirty. To them the thing is taboo.

As we know in many societies clitorises are viewed as 'dirty' and are removed. This has nothing to do with objective reality and everything to do with controlling women in male dominated and often polygamous societies. (FYI this stuff FAR predates Islam - by thousands of years. In areas where Islam found female circumcision in place it stayed and where it wasn't it usually didn't then begin).

What I find interesting about this issue of pubic hair is that it is effectively a quasi religious taboo that has developed within my lifetime. Our belief systems are as fluid and changeable as they are claimed to be fixed and rooted in 'rational' objectivity. Plus ca change!:).
