I was just thinking about this... from what I know a Courtesan is a girl that sees a very limited and select number of clients who are regulars.

Now I see a lot of girls on Perb, and even CL for that matter that call them courtesan's. They are no different then any common prostitute with the exception that the rates a a little more... You can defiantly argue looks or personality, but there are some COMPLETE knockouts on Carmen fox and even CL that don't advertise as courtesans.

So how does charging a slight premium qualify an SP to call her self a courtesan? I think its a bastardization of the term.

Nope, that's not really the definition. The actual definition is a prostitute who sees clients of high social standing, especially members of a royal court. It doesn't matter how many clients, if they're regulars, if she also sees clients of lower social standing, or what she charges. Of course, if she really does qualify for the term courtesan, chances are she does only see a select few clients, and chances are she does charge a lot more, but not necessarily.

So, do the SPs who you see on perb and CL advertising themselves as courtesans really deserve the term? Probably not, but without knowing who all of their clients are, there's no way of knowing for sure.

I tend to think of a 'courtesan' as someone who has a 'sugar daddy' who is of 'high social standing'.

In other words, someone who won't fuck me.

SPs post as GFE but then refuse LFK, and you are wondering why they call themselves courtesans when they are simply 5 client a day prostitutes?

I agree that for the most part it is a marketing spin, as Kim said above.

How many men would feel comfortable seeing a prostitute or hooker when they could see an escort or courtesan? Some would, of course, but many first-timers are so nervous that I honestly can't seem them clicking on an ad that says "sexy ho for you" when there are options like "Gorgeous, Friendly, and Educated Vancouver Escort Available." It's largely about making the customer feel comfortable, while also trying to give some indication of what kind of service is provided. I'm not trying to make a sweeping explanation about why the term is used, or what type of clients is drawn to it - I just think there is some element of truth in what I have described above.

These days, I think "courtesan" has simply come to mean a university-educated, beautiful, and socially skilled escort who tends to have high or above average rates, and who is comfortable with public outings, dinner dates, travel, and overnight dates. While many may use the term, I think the term is very appropriately used by ladies like Classy Angel and Irresistible Isabelle, just to name a couple.

I think Holly's description is bang on for what could colloquially be called a courtesan. Whether all women who use the word to describe themselves actually fit within the category is a whole other thing altogether.
