I have a question , if you are Canadian but living in a different country as a snowbird how many days do you have to come back to Canada to stay?
I always thought since most ppl stays here 6 month of the year in summer time then take off around November for 6 month but there's no really rules to that is it ?

The 180 day rule is for those going to the US is to prevent being deemed a US resident for Tax purposes, messy an expensive. Also a few Canadain / Provincial government programs require you to be a resident in Canada for you to qualify, BC medical is an example. And each program has slightly different rules and timelines

Check your closet..:)
I think it should be shortened to 2 weeks. An ideal vacation time.....
Why?
Over 50% of Canadians can't afford to be snowbirds....
What a dumb idea.......
Just because you can’t afford it nobody else should..???
Cry me a river......

182 days out of 365, but only 3 days a week, hmmm, unless you go much much longer over summer or holidays...

The point is every government and medical rules are made for people with money, not the populace in general.
If the rules did not force the "rich people" back to Canada, they wouldn't be living in Canada at all (all year round).
The kicker is that Canada looses out on money that is spent in other countries (which would help the economy in Canada).

If you look at a young couple today, they will have a mortagage that will last until they are in their 60s. The kicker for these people are the overpriced housing and cost of living.
Today people in their 40s and up and own a home and close to paying off the mortgage, are probally set.
You need one high earning spouse to afford a family; or 2 mid level incomes. Some families have one spouse stay at home because they would loose money (when kids are considered) ....

Snow birds would be in the top 10% earners in Canada.... The people who can afford to live another place other then Canada.

I think that if you make your wealth in Canada, the least you can do is spend your wealth in Canada. Buy Canadian.... Support the Canadian economy.

And the medical side, if you get sick in the US, just come back to Canada and everything is paid for.... Yup the advantage here is to the rich....

You see the rich make the rules; so that they can take advantage of them....

Think I am whinning..... just think about all the other people that can't afford vacations, because they have to work to make ends meet...

NO LOKI, my suggestion puts everyone on the same level on the playing field. And I can't imagine why the people who can afford to be snowbirds feel offended by my suggestion....:rolleyes:

Top 10% of Canadians pay either 47.1% (Fraser Institute) or 54% (Financial Post) of the taxes .... think about that.

Why the fuck should I pay 53.5% in taxes of what I make over $222,420. So I should keep less than 50% of each additional dollar. This is before GST and PST.

So those who make their wealth in Canada has already paid MORE than their fair share of taxes.

And regarding taking advantage of the Canadian medical system .... how do you think it is funded?

Yes I am in the top 10%.

If the top 10% could control the tax laws we sure as hell would not want to pay more than 50% in taxes.

I resist posting here but guys like 80watts can go fuck themselves with their lack of knowledge.

FWIW I also think what 80watts said was dumb, and I too am in the top 10% (honestly doesn't take much these days, which speaks more to the inequality really), but what you said is purely subjective.

I'm so happy you didn't make the rules and you can't change the rules.

Top 10% in Canada averge income $134,900
Bottom 90% in Canada average income $28,000

Hmmm.... Fuck those 90ers. If the top 10 have to pay half in tax then everyone should.
Right? (this of course said in a sarcastic voice).

When I travel, I see and talk to a lot of middle class travellers. The 30-80% income bracket. They get their Vacation time in it seems.

But the long haulers appear to be BOTH in the Top 10% and bottom 20%. Those young hippies backpacking around the globe, taking odd jobs to keep going, working part time in ski resorts or surf shops half way around the world. And then there’s the older wealthy seniors with a summer home or long-term rental in the sun belt.

For both, it really doesn’t seem to be about having to come back to Canada, it’s about how long you can stay in the USA or other countries before you get into immigration / visa trouble. Like 6 months cumulative per year south of the border.

As a Canadian citizen, I can come and go as I please. When I’m not here, the bills just keep on rolling in (except food), and the taxes just keep on rolling out. I’m still part of the great Canadian economic shit show. So I choose to go to warm places periodically that make me happy when it’s cold and wet up here. I made life choices and worked hard to get this point, and I am fucking well going to enjoy spending my remaining money any way I choose, after the tax man has already re-distributed 50% of my income, and my ongoing domestic expenses take up another 40%. It’s a good thing booze is cheap in the sun belt, because I only have 10% left to self-medicate with. And the SP scene is brutal!

I know, violins...

Sounds more like you are entittled..... "I pay more taxes".... yada yada yada..... justification?
If you don't like Canadian taxes, move to another country....

and take your money with you, if you haven't done it yet, why haven't you? something to do with tax laws, and early withdrawal of money and benefits of being a Cdn Citizen (which you probably wouldn't get if you leave Canada completely).

And you forgot about all the tax breaks you can get, with a higher income. RRSP, RESP, Tax free account, and after market income of Capital gains and dividends on stock.....to name only a few investment opportunities with the advent of extra cash.

Cash that lower income people don't have access to; and do not contribute much to RRSP or RESP or tax free accounts....

So are you really paying 53% for tax, or is it much lower with tax write-offs? Yes the top income earners do control how much tax they pay. Do you contribute more to a politcal party, if so, its a better write off then to a charity/church.... (RRSP-18%, RESP about 3000.00??/year, tax free account is 5000/year, Dividend approx 25%)

https://www.moneysense.ca/save/tax-brackets-canada-provinces-2020/#:~:text=For 2020, the Ontario surtax is a bit,of provincial tax owed that is over $4,830.
The above tax rate says for over 214,00.00 tax rate is 33%.

The burden of taxes in Canada falls on the middle class, not the wealthy (1%) (approx 30 to 95% of Canadians). Of course I am assumming the poor, the middle class and the top 1-2%.

People working are only taking 2 to 3 weeks vacation, depending on what job they have. Low income people rarely get more than 2 weeks a year at the start of their careers.

The reality is that I really don't like assholes that complain and say "I pay so much taxes", which means they are boasting about how much money they make...

its the tone...

The question the Canuck numbers guy should be asking, is "if the poor can't afford it, why should the rich be allowed to go?" , "Is it fair?" , "What can I do to help?" instead he says "I pay 53% in taxes".....

As for those backpackers in their 20s, I am going to guess that their parents are well off and can afford to send them extra cash, when the shit hits the fan....Most of them aren't gonna say "my mom brought my clothes and backpack or my flight over here".... just guessing....They all want to say "I did this on my own"....And I am not talking about the guys in the tent cities in Vancouver and Victoria. It s the ones travelling Europe and Asia and other countries, taking time off from school....

And PM is right it the laws of those countries which send Canadians back (cause they don't want to lose those Cdn benefits) to Canada. But they have other countries they can visit, which brings it back to the limits of how long a Cdn can be out of Canada....

For all the people who told me to fuck off- you did not have any arguements why it should be longer than 2 weeks? other to to tell me to fuck off....

I must of hit a nerve or guilty conscience.....
