Did not know about this. Thanks for the post.
I have a picture with him in Germany a number of years ago which was unplanned during the pickup of a vehicle of mine. Was such a treat to say hello.
A long and amazing life at 90. The racers of today will never experience the incredible skill that was required to fight out races in the old days.
Brutal when you think about that. The safety aspect was almost non existant. No seatbelts and they wore leather helmets
going 125-150 mph. Open wheel cars and my god the rubber tires that held them to the road?
What tires? Not much technology there to speak of with Bias ply rubber.
I recall what scared the shit outta me when racing on M/T Drag slicks is when you get off
the pedal after going through the traps your front end falls on its face and rear end comes off
the ground swaying back and forth. Not a very comfortable feeling until you were able to acquire
new drag radials. What a difference. 140plus mph made it a cakewalk.
Yah it sure makes you think what the racers of the old days had to put up with.
Even today with Top Fuel nitro funnycars they have the engine in front of them and there is NO
firewall between the driver and 10,000 plus HP if it explodes. No thanks!!!
Just ask John Force about those blower explosions before they had to have straps tying
them down to the block. :fear:
