Why is it when a situation arises that a dog or some other pet has to be put down, many people still refer to it as "destroying the pet?" A lethal injection, the common method of putting down pets, hardly constitutes the concept of destruction. That phrase brings to mind the notion that they stick some dynamite up the dog's ass, put it in a metallic room and blow it up into a million pieces.

It's just a euphemism that's used, along with "put down" because people don't like to say "killed". Somehow, it doesn't sound as harsh.

Many people don't say someone died; they say "passed away". Same reason.

Not exactly, considering that "destroying" an animal is kinda extreme.
