Nice to see some posters here are living in a fantasy world. Nice trolling, hook line and sinker. What sort of moron posts on this board that he's gonna get a gun so he can shoot people who are after his stuff? Stop watching Alex Jones....it rots your brain.
I don't really think of having a gun . I may be a little too unstable ..
But i do think of getting dragon skin body armor to protect my self from the off chance i do run it to one of those situation here some moron has a gun. or a knife.

On a business trip to Toronto, I participated in a shooting range excursion. For a few hundred dollars, I tried a variety of hand pistols, rifles, shotguns and semi-automatics in a controlled environment. This was on my so called 'bucket list' of things to do. The pre-shooting training was invaluable and the trainer was a couple of steps to my right side at all times.
When the timing is right, I shall outfit myself with such a variety of arsenal. Why? Why not? : )
It may take a couple of years to obtain the necessary permits/licenses but it will happen.

Is a shotgun or handgun or an automatic weapon is going to stop the government ? Is it going to stop an army coup or a police department run amok in North America ? I doubt it. I know there are wildly entertaining situations depicted on TV with shows like 24 ( etc etc ) but this certainly isn't Rawanda or Bosnia.
Guns are here to stay unfortunately. They serve a purpose but generally they cause death and destruction and the fewer people who have them the better. I can see a benefit to learning how to be proficient in their use but I'm not advocating ownership. If you're really that distrustful of government perhaps you should get more personally involved in politics. Fight your disapproval and distrust of government from the inside out. I think we can serve ourselves and society better by joining peaceful organizations dedicated to promoting and protecting democracy. And if you're concerned about anarchy in times of catastrophe then become proactive in other ways. Be a benefit to our society and not a hindrance by joining an emergency response organization. Join a search search and rescue team or become a volunteer firefighter.

Sorry, but I lived in Montreal during the ice storm and I didn't witness anything even close to what you're describing.
I lived with my dad at the time and we were amongst the very first to lose power. My dad stayed behind because he was worried about looting or vandalism if the house was left empty. He never saw anything suspicious around the neighborhood and police were constantly patrolling to ensure no one was doing anything. We lived in the suburbs.
I left the day after we lost power and first stayed not too far, at a coworker's place because the restaurant I worked in still had power - so I was still working (and making crazy money haha). Unfortunately I was only there one night because she lost power the next morning. So I went to my mom's place next, she lived in the East end of Montreal. Never saw anything like what you describe or heard it from anyone else, not even close. I don't know where your aunt lived but I don't think it was anywhere near as bad as you're making it sound. IMO maybe there were a few isolated incidents - but it certainly was not widespread. People actually responded totally differently and ended up in large groups together wherever there was still power, making the best of it and welcoming anyone who had no power themselves.
Without getting into all the details - I think New Orleans is a case on its own because for one, a lot of looters were cops and their police was known for having huge problems ranging from corruption, racism and more! New Orleans is and was home to some of the poorest people and the disaster was handled so poorly and without the resident's interests in mind, that it's really hard to look at what happened there and think that would apply here.
I'm not totally against the gun idea and I admit I don't know the rules but I think people who plan to buy one should have extensive knowledge on how to properly use them not only the official gun owner but every one in the household. The gun should be locked away and I personally think guns and small children in the same home is a super bad idea.
My father had a gun (for hunting) and it was locked away. That didn't stop my younger brother from getting to it; kids are pretty crafty that way. I got home from school one afternoon, to find the front bay window shattered. If I'd come home 20 minutes earlier, who knows... Or if there hadn't been a huge snow bank blocking the sidewalk/street, who knows.. My parents didn't take any chances after that and moved the gun to an uncle's house where there were no children living. There are too many stories of kids killing or injuring themselves or another child accidentally to know it happens all the time.
There are also risks of that gun not being any help to you but instead ending up being used against you. That's personally why I don't have any inclination to get one; I think it often gives people a false sense of being protected when in fact, the gun would do the opposite. I don't think a gun will feed you or keep your family alive on its own. And if everything breaks down, you'll need a lot more than a gun or shooting skills to survive chaos. Whether or not you choose to get a gun, I think none of it will matter if you don't take more steps to plan ahead for disaster/emergency preparedness. A gun is really useless without any drinking water, food, basic supplies and survival skills.
Intelligent disaster/emergency preparedness and planning + acquiring important, vital real life survival skills ahead of time will do a hell of a lot more than a gun and bullets IMO.
