VANCOUVER (CP) -- For the first time, charges have been laid under a new piece of federal legislation designed to combat human trafficking.
The charges under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act follow a lengthy investigation involving Vancouver police, the RCMP and the Canadian Border Services Agency.
Wai Chi 'Michael' Ng, 41, of Vancouver has been charged with human trafficking in the case. He faces 21 charges.
The investigation began last May when Vancouver police responded to a call of an assault outside a Vancouver massage parlour.
At that time, Ng was charged under the Criminal Code for bringing two women from China into this country and forcing them into prostitution.
Ng appeared in provincial court Wednesday but was released on bail with strict conditions.
