I watched the replay on CTV channel 9. I'm like what the hell! But that 270 degree turn has been very risky.
But the good thing is the Georgian team stays in the Games! One good thing!

Very sad...so young. That was a hard video to watch. I saw it on the net then watched it on the news. Looked much worse on TV.

I saw a video just now, he probably was gone on impact. Too bad, young guy was probably pretty pumped about the Olympics, then this happens to him.

Insane speeds while just lying down on a sled...most people don't drive their cars at 145 kph.

I felt like I was going to vomit when I watched the footage. CTV should have provided a warning that they were showing graphic footage. I could have done without watching this poor boy snapping his neck.

A really tragic event for a boy of 22 years old. My heart goes out to the family.

From another site:

Under no circumstance, should your body physically come off the track, there definitly should be some raised surface around the entire track, there is no raised barrier along the straightaway because no one has ever anticipated someone to come off on a straightaway. It wouldn't make a difference if those pillars were padded, sudden decelleration from 150km/h will kill you, if you wipe out, the decellation has to be gradual, like all he other luge accidenets i've seen where you just slide down the track and lose speed, imagine if there was plexiglass on that track, the luger would hit the plexiglass and slide down the track, minimal injuries. how you can have steel gurders running along there is crazy, yes it is not likely that someone could come off the track, just like in nascar, it is not likely a car could get airborne enough the hit above the concrete barrier but they have a fence on top of the barrier, so why isn't this safety measure put in for luge? I think this is shoddily put together, not thought through enough, but there sure is lots of money put into it, i wonder where that is going

here's what happens in nascar if you come off the track:

in case you didn't notice Hubba...

this is a thread discussing the tragic and untimely death of a young Olympian...

leave it to you to cheapen it by injecting your inappropriate sophmoronic (sic) humour:confused::mad:...

Hey huny, while your attempt at pretending to be a caring and compassionate human being is a step in the right direction. Your track record of disingenuous, hurtful and ignorant comments speak volumes about the real you. Nice effort though.

Not that I'm an expert, but shouldn't there be a wall slightly higher than waist level high? I mean, even at the water park in Chiliwack they seem to have thought of building protective walls on the waterslilde so you don't fly out and over the top.
exactly...

apparently they are retrofitting it as we speak...

but the design was terribly flawed...

like alot of things concerning these Olympics...

but now is not the time and place...

all they cared about was making it the fastest in the world...

so we could brag about it being the fastest in the world...

safety of the athletes was secondary...

even after this tragedy, all we hear from the propaganda machine is how it is the fastest and most technical course in the world...

how crass...

What a shock - bonehead uses athlete's death to get in cheap shots. Nice.

I give it a 4.6, while the Russian judges score him a 2.3 for effort and the difficulty in use of brain matter.

Apparently, an Edmonton based engineering firm designed the track and when designing it, they wanted to make it the most challenging track in the world. From what I read though, they may have made a mistake, it was supposed to max out at 135kph, instead it's 20 kph too fast.

I find it interesting that they would say it had nothing to do with the course, but yet they are admitting that the wall wasn't high enough. The issue to me is the steel beam that he hit, not very forgiving when you have a course set up that doesn't allow you to make a mistake without smashing into a steel girder. It's kind of like having a hockey rink set up so that when you are hit over the boards you smash into a concrete wall...WTF. But obviously the athletes made the choice to ride the course, so they knew the risk.
