Ha ha ha

if they win their last seven regular games straight and win all their earlier playoff rounds.

Roloson was solid in goal against the Ducks tonight.

Six games of last seven are at home at least....except Oilers are not that great at home.

Why are the Oilers always in a dogfight this time of the season?

I don't know how Roloson hasn't burned out yet. 54 shots against him last night. Brutal.

Oilers are in a dogfight for the playoffs and it'll be interesting to see if they can hang on.

That's just the Oilers being the Oilers :p

Well they're who they've always been since 97 a 7-10 team roughly. Different players but, pretty much same management yes they went from Ron Low to Kevin Lowe and now MacT and with management Sather to Lowe and now Tambelleni. To me it's the mangement more than anything as to why were in this situation. A bubble playoff team for that stretch. Until the culture of mangement changes we might not see a change I do like some of the talent we've acquired Hemsky, Souray, Vishnovsky wasn't bad until getting hurt.

I agree. I don't think the management or coaching is going to change anytime soon, but hopefully the owner will be more accomodating to let things get done. Weren't they trying to woo Jagr? I think this off season will be interesting to see who they acquire. We won't be going far in the play offs, the talent is there but too many of the grit players from the last run are now gone.

Hell, I'd like to see the Oilers in the playoffs, and I'm glad they're still in the running. I'd love to see a year where every Canadian team makes it to the playoffs. Obviously that won't be this year - the Canadian teams in the West are all in the running as of now, but in the East Toronto and Ottawa are pretty much write-offs.

MacTavish has to go. The team itself has always looked good on paper yet there's always the lacking regular season play and then the huge battle for a playoff berth. The one constant for the past decade has been the coaching and management. Hiring Tambellini from Vancouver has been a great first step so far. Next step is to replace the coaching staff.

Guess I spoke to soon.

Not mathmatically eliminated but looking at the last five games, Sharks, Canucks, home and away with the Flames its all over but the recriminations and finger pointing.

Too Bad.

Better start polishing the old golf clubs.

I can't see MacT keeping his job after what will likely be yet another playoff miss. Oiler fans will revolt. Truthfully, they shouldn't really even be in playoff contention. If Rollo hadn't won several games single-handedly, it would be a moot point..

you gotta point the finger at Lowe... he's not doing a good enough job putting a proper team together.

I'm not a fan of of macT either. They should try to get Renny... lots of young guys on this team and that's supposed to be his forte...

Renney? I dunno.

There were rumors that Pat Quinn taking over after coaching Canadian Juniors to the gold medal, proving that he'd be good for the young guys.

My vote? Brent Sutter. He's said that he's getting homesick and Viking is only a couple of hours from E-town. So if he quits the Devils...

Oilers eliminated from playoffs

08/04/2009 1:38:20 AM

The Edmonton Oilers are out of the playoffs for the third straight year, as they fell 2-1 to the visiting Los Angeles Kings at Rexall Place on Tuesday.

The loss, coupled with St. Louis' victory over Phoenix later the same night, officially eliminated the Oilers from post-season play.

The Kings scored two goals four minutes into the game, with Alexander Frolov and Wayne Simmonds giving L.A. (33-36-11) all the offence it needed.

Jonathan Quick stood tall in the Kings net, making 38 saves as Edmonton (37-34-9) threw everything it had at him to try and tie the game.

"The last two games are going to be tough to play," Oilers forward Sam Gagner said. "It's a pretty bad feeling in here after coming into this season really excited to get it going, and then hovering around the middle of the pack for a while and faltering in the end. It's a tough thing to deal with."

Oiler goalie Dwayne Roloson made 27 saves in Edmonton's net.

The Oilers' best chance to even the score came with about seven minutes left to go in the game.

Winger Ethan Moreau thought he had a wide-open net after receiving a perfect cross-crease pass, but with Quick down and out he hit the post, and the Kings goalie covered the loose puck soon after.

"We faltered at the worst possible time of the year," Moreau said. "The last couple weeks we didn't get the results, regardless of how we played. We put ourselves in a position of having to win games. It's very disappointing."

Too many bullets to dodge

The Oilers dodged a bullet earlier Tuesday when Chicago defeated the Predators 4-2, temporarily keeping them alive in the playoff hunt. But when the Blues defeated Phoenix 5-1 later that night, it meant the end of Edmonton's post-season dream.

"We just didn't have any jump at all at the start," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "It was just a terrible start, virtually from everybody."

The Oilers went 0-for-3 on the man-advantage. Los Angeles didn't have a power play all night.

Instead of jumping on a team that was already out of the playoffs, Edmonton found itself on the back foot early on.

The slow start cost the team dearly. Kings winger Frolov took a shot from the point that went through Roloson for his 31st of the year just 55 seconds into the game.

L.A. pounced on the Oilers again soon after, when Simmonds scored at 3:46 to put the Kings up 2-0, stunning the home crowd.

Edmonton came out with much more firepower in the second, as the Oilers outshot the Kings 19-7.

Edmonton's hard work finally paid off at 16:29 of the second. A faceoff win went back to the point and defenceman Denis Grebeshkov fired it on the L.A. goal, where it was deflected by Fernando Pisani for his seventh of the season.

Little bit of luck

The Oilers had some luck go their way in the waning seconds of the second. Frolov knocked down Roloson while the Kings forward was jostling with Edmonton defenceman Sheldon Souray in front of the net. Anze Kopitar then seized the puck, but could only hit the crossbar with Roloson down and out.

With desperation sinking in, Edmonton threw everything at the Kings net in the third, outshooting L.A. 14-8 in the period and 33-15 over the final 40 minutes, but the Oilers could only get one goal past Quick.

"We talked about finishing out the year strong," Kings defenceman Matt Greene said. "These last three games are huge for us. We're just trying to make sure we... are playing hard.

"It's just part of the game," the former Oiler added. "We're going for points here, we're not going to lie down for anybody. Just another game for us."

Three fights punctuated Tuesday's proceedings. L.A.'s Brian Boyle tussled with Oiler Theo Peckham and Kings defenceman Jack Johnson battled Edmonton forward Dustin Penner in the first period.

Heavyweights Zack Stortini of the Oilers and L.A.'s Raitis Ivanans also dropped their gloves in the second.

This would be a great result to the Mac T resignation today. Brent would be a excellent choice to take this team in a new direction. He would definitely demand discipline from his players.

Tambellini talks about decision to relieve MacTavish of coaching duties

Edmonton Oilers General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the club has relieved Craig MacTavish of his head coaching duties. Listen to the press conference

Named the eighth coach in Oilers history on June 22, 2000, MacTavish compiled a career record of 301-252-103 (.537) in 656 regular season games over the course of eight seasons between 2000-01 and 2008-09.

MacTavish became the 36th coach in NHL history to win 300-or-more games with a 5-3 win versus the Vancouver Canucks on April 4th at Rexall Place. He finished the 2008-09 season ranked 11th in both career wins and games coached among active NHL coaches and sits 36th all-time in wins and 41st in games coached.

He completes his coaching tenure behind the Oilers bench ranked second among Edmonton coaches in games coached, wins, losses, ties/overtime losses and winning percentage.

Tambellini stated, “On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to thank Craig and his family for their outstanding commitment to the Edmonton Oilers and the city of Edmonton over the past 10 years.”

The former Oilers’ captain has a 17-13 (.567) record in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and became the third coach to guide the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Final.

In 2005-06 MacTavish guided the Oilers to their first trip to the Stanley Cup Final since 1990 as Edmonton fell in seven games to the Carolina Hurricanes. After finishing the regular season in eighth place in the NHL’s Western Conference standings with a 41-28-13 record, MacTavish led the Oilers to within a game of their sixth Stanley Cup. In the post-season the Oilers went 15-9 and defeated the President Trophy winning Detroit Red Wings, the San Jose Sharks and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on their way to winning the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl as Western Conference champions.

The Edmonton Oilers 30th Anniversary Season is presented in part by the Rexall Family of Pharmacies, Bell, Molson Canadian, ATB Financial and Ford.

Awesome news. It will be interesting to see how this dual system works. Renney should help out our D and PK, while Quinn should improve the offence and command a ton of respect. Tambellini's still a huge summer ahead of him so I won't go into predictions...we have major holes on this team. I have a feeling we might lure Jagr over here though...he loves Hemsky and I think he gets along with Renney too. Sweeeeet!
