I need to get myself a good mountain bike and am wondering if anyone knows of a good mountain bike for $500.00 or less? Please let me know as Im looking for one REAL SOON!!!!

Im in Vancouver, but car can take me anywhere.....just need a good bike as Im getting back into riding again 
I just sold my third bike but I do have an awesome hardtail that I might sell for $1,200 (it retails at $2,400), if you are interested.
Cruiser you can not buy a "good" mountain bike for $500. The components and frame in this price range are not very good. As you approach $800 or so then you are starting to get better components
I have a used Rocky Mountain Slayer for sale at $2000. But thats a bit much for most recreational riders. I would say spend abit more than $500 so you get better components. Having a bike that doesn't shift or brake worth a crap isn't a joy to ride. --- Kev

its a nice bike (wouldnt fit my riding style though) but $4000 (depending on how you have it equipped) may be the msrp but definitely not what you could pick it up for. a 5 min search on the net and im sure i could have it at my door for under 3

I freeride on the Shore, Seymour, Fromme etc. so my replacement ride, which i don't own but borrow when ever i like is a Santa Cruz Bullet, or a Norco Shore. Both bikes with all the upgrades are approaching $5000 each. Actually a Norco Team Shore is worth $6000 i believe and the one i ride has all the same goodies as the Team.
Well Marvin you can do as you suggest by upgrading but in the end you will end up paying more. I tell everyone to spend as much as you can first by buying a bike with good components and keep the upgrading to a minimum. The reason is they can burn you at the bike shop with the cost of parts.Marvin said:

The slayer doesn't serve my purpose any more because it doesn't have the suspension travel i need to ride the shore. My bike only has 3 1/2" inches of travel out back, with 5" inches up front. The new Slayers have 5 inches front and back. My daily ride is a Diamond Back Arrival which i purchased in 1987 for $1200. Yes $1200 back then. Theres alot of good bikes for a $1000 bikes Cruiser. None with beer holders that i am aware of.LOL Its September and the sales should be on at the local bikes shops you should just shop around. Be aware of the type of components that are on the bike. Don't settle for Shimano LS group when you can get a bike for the same price with XT. A better group. If you don't know what i'm talking about you should do some research on what are the better components on the markets. Some bikes may give you awesome deraillours and shifters but skimp on the headset and bottom bracket. The latter two are more expensive to replace if they fail. I encourage you to do you homework first before shopping for a bike so you are aware what are the better components on the market. Shifters, brakes, deraillours, forks, bottom brackets, headsets, cranks, etc.

What do you want the bike for? No point dropping big bucks if you're totally new or may not use it much. I have a bike that was around $500...yes its a tank in the weight class, but that also means I can lock it up outside a store and find it when I come out....no point recommending expensive gear to someone who may not use it much. (And yes, my shifters/brakes work just fine, the extra money would strictly reduce the weight of the frame).
I am also in the market for a decent bike. However, I am a weekend rider and not into heavy trailing but occasionally do ride on harsher terrain.
In this case, I would think that a $1000 bike would be ok.

Depends how well it was maintained, how much use etc. As helpful as this forum can be, someone would have to see the bike to provide a real answer.
