Looking for a career change suggestion

I work for a living doing HVAC work, and the time is coming close where I am almost done my trade and ready to get my ticket. The thing is, I look at this job as something to fall back on. I don't mind doing it one bit, and if I must, I will do it for the rest of my life until the day I die. The job i'm working has some security involved in it(I can find jobs easily, next day or within days usually), but the construction industry is never stable. My work is all hard labour and long hours. Those long hours mean I get to make a very good living doing what I do, but the typical work week for me is roughly 50+ hours(usually around the 60 mark).

Being a former high school drop out, I worked only a handful of lower end jobs until I apprenticed in a trade. My education, or lack of for that matter(still have my high school diploma though), has helped me get this far in life, and I am looking to get farther ahead. Some time soon, I will be upgrading my less desirable courses from high school, and plan to go to university if everything works out. The only thing I know is I don't want o do this type of work for the rest of my life.

I am not lazy by any means, and will work my way up the totem pole. I am looking for an office setting where I just go to one fixed location every day and every day will be relatively predictable. I just want to hit that 100k a year mark without having to spend an entire year working 7 days a week for it. I know it takes time to get up there, but that is my goal. Can anyone recommend a job that will put me in an office making that type of cash? Since I will be upgrading alot of courses, it leaves just about anything up in the air.

Hi Shy Guy,

If you are serious about hitting $100k in an office setting I would suggest going into internet marketing in one form or another. There is a great deal of money to be made as it is the "new frontier" so to speak for advertising on a global basis. Check out any Internet Technology courses and schools in your area, many will offer part-time or remote courses.

All the best to you in your new endeavours.

Cheers,

Miss Maryn

a refridgeration ticket is something to be very proud of.
it is a great trade with big upside...... stay with it , but learn the pricing and contract quoting part of it.
you will not get rich working for someone else. pay attention to the prices of materials and try to get copy's of your bosses quotes.
take a night school course while continuing to work on small business management. research materials that you regularly have to get from RSL and find another source and get a exclusive on importing it....congrats on getting your ticket.

If you are interested in going to university you may want to think about an engineering degree. There is a shortage of them in a number of different fields and they are paid well. I'm not sure what the admission standards are but it is easy enough to find out.

I'd say go with engineering too. But the entrance requirements are high. Graduates start at typically $5k/mo. 6 figures is common within 10 years on the job. If you are doing HVAC work, go with mechanical or some related form of engineering - perhaps metallurgical/thermal systems.

Stay away from civil - yes big money, but few jobs.

Electrical - yes, if you have a brain for software programming too, because the electrical field has absorbed a lot of that.

i kind of agree with one comment, your ticket is something to be proud of,

and if you learn the office end of things bids and quotes
well shit.
it depends on how motivated you are, but there is alot more to be made if you go this route and open your own company one day

i know a few mutlti millioniares that started off with a simple ticket
