where we would be if conception/contraception was a matter of spit or swallow ? Would there be a Roe vs Wade....would the world's population be where it is today ? How different would things be....or would they ?

You could argue that conception is just that simple. "Swallow" (ie. semen enters the vagina) and the little boys start swimming upstream in hopes of fertilising an egg. "Spit" (cover the guys Johnson with a condom or get snipped) and don't let the process start.

Unfortunately some patriarchal religions don't like condoms, and seem to have the same attitudes to reproduction they did thousands of years ago when more population was a good thing.

Reproduction is pretty simple. Humans, particularly men who want to control the behaviour of other humans, have made things complicated.

Ultimately it comes down to the Catholic Church in not wanting people to fuck.
They stopped priests from doing it (cause they were fucking the parishioner's wives, while the husband was working), since then the priests have been praying on boys, don't hear so much about them praying on girls.
Image of the Catholic Church and the celibate priest would act more for God, and the power of the church, then for their own ambitions.
Research puts Christianity as a recipient of fertility cults from ancient history. Yup the Church is a fertility cult where its thing about birth control is logical. But Control is the power the church wanted and so they controled the use of sex outside of marriage, when the church was a big part of everyday life. The church control of everyday life has been weaning since the early 20th century.
Another reason back in ancient times to have only husband and wife fucking was the spread of disease.
In modern history with people fucking up a storm, Aids came round and scared the shit out of everybody in the 80s. Condon use increased; swapping fluids was not encouraged etc.
Ultimately Roe vs Wade is about the control of the female. You control the female, you control the male.

Back in the day when families had a gay son the biggest win they could get out of that is to proclaim “Our Son joined the Priesthood”, no wonder they call it the Rectory.

O.K......not sure what condoms have to do with BJ's, other then there are those females that don't like to go BBBJ. A mouth full of sperm because of a faulty condom still allows for spitting the little bastards out...not so with a vagina full.

Just in case it wasn't clear...there is a bit of a tongue in cheek aspect to this post...and of course a complete restructuring of the reproductive system...well at least the conception part. Don't panic...externally everything stays the same.

People want to hang that on Catholicism alone, but that's wrong. They did not invent these ideas. As the biggest religious institution, it survives to take the blame; as an institution it also has power, and uses that to defend itself (even when doing something wrong). Kids are just as likely to get abused by any of the other churches' preachers, but they make up their own rules, and their abuses fly under the radar, until something exposes it all and blows it up. Then those churches disappear, easily replaced.

The whole of Abrahamic religion (judaism, christianity, & islam) carries both the attitude that women exist to be wives & breed, and that women enjoying & wanting sex (as guys do) is some kind of scary / dangerous malady or offense against god; also, that all men should want to conquer some wombs, but basically exist to work, protect, and die. Maybe before birth control existed, a bunch of half-starved bronze age sheep farmers coming up with ideas like this made sense in their world; people died like flies, from practically anything. (Caught cold? Dead. Ate spoiled shellfish? Dead. Broke leg? Dead. Encountered a lion? Dead. Smiled at king's daughter? Very dead.)

Plus marriages were considered as much social / political alliances to bind families & communities so people wouldn't just bash each other's brains in for the scare food supply - or breed by outright abduction and raping, or sneaking around behind each others' backs. Humans are a nasty species - let's face it. "Control the female" meant controlling the right to exist at all, on a genetic level. The ancient religious leaders maybe knew nothing about genetics (or anything more than basic biology), but they understood animal husbandry, and figured breeding was the only true way to survive. Sounds crude and brutal, but really we have a lot more options in life today than people did in ancient times. Fucking without breeding is a game-changer.

What is messed up about the anti-abortion/anti-contraception groups today is that they insist on still living like those ancient near-cavemen who came up with these rules with regard to breeding, but not with regard to medicine, hygiene, food supply, travel, communications, etc. (which makes them hypocrites). They want to return to a world where people bred like rabbits, forgetting how that world was balanced out by much more preventable death. The human population has exploded because we have all those other things, but still breed like we're in danger of dying out. (Ironic, considering the effects of this will soon cause mass extinction and put an end to civilization.)

If you are familiar with The Handmaid's Tale (I watch the show), one of the sick little undercurrents about that world is not so much the religion of their society, but the hypocrisy of it.
Humans are faced with a biological crisis where something like 95% of women are unable to breed. The women who still can become an incredible valuable "commodity"; basically, to any man without access to these women, genetically speaking, you die out.
Therefore faced with this, the political & economic elite decide that they will seize control of those women by force, thus keeping genetic survival as a privilege only they enjoy. How to do this, when there are so many more people who cannot have the privilege of genetic survival (barren women and angry/desperate lower class men)? Well, the answer to that is to create a new state (Gilead) founded on the ancient principle of religious patriarchy. The thing is: the religious dogma they use all a lie, an excuse, a scam. The leaders of Gilead keep their barren wives, they keep other barren women on the side as sex slaves, and on top of that they keep the Handmaids (for breeding). Basically Gilead's male elite gets to have the religious sex cult to benefit themselves alone; the male-non-elite serve as brutal enforcers, because if they do well enough, maybe they get to join that elite - maybe they get the privilege of survival. It's a sick future world Atwood has created, but if you see only the religious fanaticism, not the cynical elitism behind it, you only see half the story.

Another good choice for this kind of dystopian tale is the movie Mad Max: Fury Road. More action-oriented, but same problem in its setting - when everything goes to shit, and civilization is toast, humanity defaults back to its animalistic "breed to survive" roots. We see the horror of it all, but some Al Qaida-ish guy watching it would wonder why the antagonist is even considered a villain, just for controlling the fertile women and the water supply.

as i've mentioned in another thread... the "religious right" is more about control then actual issues... they didn't care about abortion until protecting segregated schools became a less palatable "call to arms".

The Real Origins of the Religious Right
They actually started to care more when some states started pushing the abortion time frame to the moment of actual birth, and beyond. That tends to get anyone with a reasonable amount of marbles to take notice.

No wonder the church had problems with pedophile priests.... The real issue was society itself --- ironic.
