The fact is that Chevy, Ford, Chrysler and more all can meet US Diesel emissions without cheating. So, why did Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and the other Volkswagen companies decide to cheat? Because it costs hundreds of dollars less to build the engine without the urea technology that others use. Since 2008 Volkswagen group have been selling vehicles at premium prices with old technology engines that the cheat code made the illusion of being new technology. Now the owners of those vehicles have a vehicle that CANNOT be made to pass a honest emissions test.

It was mostly because of the design philosophy used in Europe as opposed to North America. In Europe they design engines to pass emissions standards, then manufacture them. In North America they do the reverse, you have to manufacture the cars first, then see if they pass the standards. That creates a lot of uncertainty, and probably adds significantly to the cost of producing a vehicle for this market. A cost that you as the consumer have to pick up btw.
lol, we may not be sure about them making US Diesel emissions without DEF (Urea) The fuel injection system in the Ford Power Stroke, Chev Duramax and Chrysler Cummins is built by Bosch as is the DEF system and the Catalyst system. The Volkswagen group uses the Bosch fuel injection system - BUT - saved money and space by not using the DEF and Catalyst systems.
The DEF and Catalyst systems take the NOx and convert it into water and nitrogen. That's why Diesel exhaust systems drip. The NOx is what the Volkswagen Group was cheating on.
I am and will always be a german car fanatic. My favourite part about the VW scandal was when the CEO was making a statement and says in a German accent, " in my German words, we really screwed up" or something along those lines. I wonder what the total fall out will be in the end for these companies...... Losing 37? Billion in a couple of days is a lot.

Used to be I despised German cars because if there was someone driving aggressively or cutting me off it was a German car almost every time, but I could respect the German engineering.
How can you respect them when they use their engineering to cheat laws meant to protect all of us as well as the environment?
I hope they get sued out of existence. The workers could rebuild the company. They could call it the German's People's Car Company or something.

I believe the maximum they can be penalized is 18 billion dollars by the court system. Doubtful considering the damage BP caused and they were fined 14 billion.
