To say this movie is a masterpiece would be an understatement. It may well be the best movie I have ever seen in my life. ...definitely in my top three along with Character and Once. The story charts the romance of college professor David Kepesh, a self-acknowledged sybarite, and one of his students, Consuela Castillo (Penélope Cruz). It’s an unlikely pairing from the onset—the bald 60-plus Kingsley and the quietly reserved 30-ish (but looking younger here) Cruz. Dennis Hopper, as a Pulitzer Prize winning poetry professor and loyal friend and confidant to Kepesh, can be seen outside of his usual Hopperistic mold, and he is equally magnificent. As adult entertainment, there’s nothing around that can touch it. ...4 stars out of 4 on the Dr. Moe scale.
