Monkeypox started in Central Africa with the virus passed to humans. It thrives in humid climates and has its first Canadian infected persons in Montreal.

Been awhile since there has been a covid post but given the general numbers, that "don't put the mask away" theme is unfortunately, a good bit of advice.

There is an uptick at the moment and there could be a 3rd wave of Omicron on the way. The difficulty right now with the stats is that a lot of testing has stopped, reverting to the home antigen tests that have a 30% accuracy in general (worse if the person doing the testing is not that good at this kind of thing). Then reporting results to someone how gets that data back to those tracking this stuff.

It seems the stats are being based more on the number of absences in the health care community but there are still a lot of folks in the hospital due to a covid variant. And waste water tests shows SARS2 is still there and is active.

I for one really don't want to go back to wearing a mask but ... it looks like I will end up using those boxes of masks I bought way back for other things than my wood working.

Monkeypox isn't the problem, it's still Covid. Cases are surging everywhere as things open up, people let their guards down and it's assumed it's all over. It's not.

Latest research shows vaccines are almost useless against new variants, it's possible to get re-infected even a few weeks after recovering from one infection, there is no immunity from infection and the symptoms seem to get worse with each infection.

Unless science comes up with new vaccines, or some other way to stop the spread, it looks like we might have to live with Covid forever. The thing that does confuse me, is what happened to the doom and gloom predictions for third world countries that had little to no vaccines? Weren't they all supposed to be dead by now? Seems the countries with the highest vaccine rates are the ones where cases are surging.

Don't kid yourself, it's surging everywhere, but there's very little in the way of a system or testing in place in the developing world. In the developing world, those folks never get into a hospital, they live or die at home. It's only in the developed world where people use advanced medicine to fight nature, in Africa and other places, they just bury the dead and get on with life.

In the so-called 1st world countries, the issue is hospital space, always has been. COVID isn't the main issue, it's the people who eat up resources in an over extended health care system when they all show up for treatment. That's a problem only in Western countries where people can actually get medical treatment. Here, when the ICU is full and they are canceling surgeries, delaying cancer treatments, that's the real crisis here. The lockdowns and mandates are used to lessen the impact on the hospitals, it's been that way since the beginning.

I can say first hand the new variants are no joke. Close friends have the entire family bed ridden, all fully vaccinated. On Paxlovid in a couple of cases, and the side effects of that are almost as bad as the COVID itself.

Friend of mine got Covid two weeks ago and almost died. The Covid weakened him and he then got an infection in his abdominal cavity. They have cut out a fair chunk of the intestines, etc., and he is stable now.

About 13 of my relatives have gotten Covid in the last month. They have done nowhere as bad, mostly flu type symptoms ranging from mild to distinct discomfort.

So people, take it seriously. It is not gone.

Currently over 15 employees off with Covid - two required urgent care. More of their family members also have/had it. New strains very infectious. One long-time, older friend died of upper respiratory problem. Wasn't confirmed it was Covid, as he died at home, but it sounds like it. One 22-year-old daughter of friend had it, and just had a sore throat, cough and sore throat for a few days, although she has said she feels exhausted still two weeks later.

In 2020 the government made it sound like anyone who survived covid was very lucky, the devastation was going to be so bad. I know a lot of people, and not even 1 of them has died of covid to this day. In fact not only has no one I know died of covid, but not even 1 has been admitted to the hospital to be treated for it.
The way they were talking 2 years ago, I expected to lose 3/4 of my friends/acquaintances by now.
Not saying that it effected no one at all.
But out of hundreds of people who I personally know, it would seem that many should be deceased, and many others should have been in ICU. It makes me wish that the government and media would be a lot more realistic about the threat, instead of blowing it so out of proportion. Why make a mountain out of a mole hill.

I still haven’t gotten to be within 5 feet of her as she’s super vigilant. It’s honestly every where , seems as soon as I know someone who’s been in a party /group /concert etc they’re sick within days 😧 worst thing is we all react to it so differently

Thank you Fiona. My buddy did have issues but unfortunately he and I decided to go a fund raiser because a friend had asked us. At this event, they jammed in the people, many of which did not take Covid seriously. We both had our 4th vaccination but it wasn't enough. It shows that you care about your mother by giving her space. Consideration for other people is very, very important. We can at least try. You stay safe too.

So, in the briefing on more testing methodology, yesterday, I caught up that Omicron B.46.4 is now in the UK and at about 9% of new cases. This is some new mutation part way between B.4 and B.5 not that that moniker makes a bit of difference. Fucking pandemic is still with us and not giving up. As far as a virus is concerned, SARS2 is a marvel at doing what it is supposed to do!! Which is to keep finding new hosts.

The confirmed cases (all variants) in Canada are at about 4.2M but ... how many, like myself and a couple of friends plus two of my kids, have had what has to be covid and did not report it? Example, in June, a lady friend of mine whom I was spending a lot of time with was having what we both thought was a cold. Grabbed a box of RAT tests and she was positive I was negative. I had a kinda cold for 3 days, she was pretty sick for a few days and weak/hazy for a few more days after, testing positive for a good part of that week. Neither of us reported this, I mean why would we, we masked up, stayed away from folks etc. Pretty much what the medical authorities would advise.

So estimate from my experience of 6 more cases. Extrapolate that to that 4+M in the stats and the number is really high. It may be over 80% of Canadians have had covid of some form despite vaccinations. The good is that the vaccinations have saved a LOT of lives!!

So get that booster fellow pooners and stay this side of the earth!!
