Thinking of switching to an internet company that is cheaper than the big two. Does anyone recommend a company? How much do you pay and what's the limit for downloads? thanks

Check out http://www.canadianisp.ca/
You can search for providers in your city by features you need. There's quite a few small companies who resell same service as Shaw/Telus but at a lower price. Some municipalities have faster&cheaper options like fiber-optics.

http://www.dslreports.com/ also has some ratings/reviews of ISPs including those in Canada.

Also you can negotiate with Telus (not sure about Shaw) especially when buying a bundle from them. My friend did that more than once. Apparently Telus are willing to offer a better deal if the customer is going to switch from them.

You all just be happy you don't have to pay the high satellite rates , and then deal with the slow download speed ,after buying the overpriced equipment... that only works half the time.
Oh and God forbid ,if there may be a cloud in the sky.!!

Check your closet..:)
You have to remember that most of the ISP ports are from Telus or Shaw.
They rent them out to different companies.
I started wit Intergate.ca which rented from Telus at the time.

i hear Shaw is cranking down your speed if you use Netflix and not their Shomi!
I've wondered about this and I have phoned Shaw twice about it. I am paying for some pretty high speed service but some nights its next to impossible to rent an iTunes movie or view a netflix movie. The Apple TV just spins around and around. Shaw says "not our problem, call Apple". I do a speed test and find I am not getting the speed I pay for and they still say its "ok" to stream movies. I had a spare new Apple TV to compare against and the same thing happened.

I cancelled my cable because I had to pay so much to get the very few channels I wanted to watch. I heard on the news today that the CRTC is on the verge of amending the rules regarding bundling channels.

Sybian, have you tried xplornet "Jupiter"? I had 3 systems for a while, worked pretty well, down to one now. It will run netflicks but burns up your bandwidth $60-$100 a month depending on package.

CRTC to require cable, satellite companies to offer basic package, with $25 cap

The country's broadcast regulator is coming out with new rules today that will require cable and satellite companies to offer customers a trimmed-down, basic channels package, sources have told The Canadian Press.

The cost of the so-called "skinny basic" package is to be capped at $25, said one source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is to announce details of its decision later today.

The ruling is the latest result from the CRTC's Let's Talk TV hearings held in the fall.

The Harper government had pushed the regulator to allow for a so-called pick-and-pay system that would allow consumers to choose and pay only for the individual channels they want.

However, the CRTC hinted late last summer that it would be open to a pick-and-pay option built on top of a lighter mandatory service than what is currently being offered widely in the industry.

It's not clear whether skinny basic would be an all-Canadian service that includes local stations and provincial educational channels, or a service that includes American networks as well.

Critics including the C.D. Howe Institute have warned that any proposals to mandate pick-and-pay channel choices would be an exercise in futility, in light of technological change. They say it could harm the industry and actually end up costing consumers more rather than less.

If your main reason to find an alternative is price, then why don't you haggle your rate down with your current provider? I never pay full price for cable/Internet/phone.

I currently pay Shaw $80+taxes/month for basic cable, basic phone and Internet 15. This is on a 6 month promotion which includes free basic cable for 6 months (gateway hardware for 2 tvs included). I did have to switch to Telus a couple years ago to prove to Shaw that I was serious about leaving Shaw to take Telus' intro offer at the time. Now, I just call in and ask for new discounts.

You won't get a discount unless you ask first.

Regarding throttling if you use Netflix, I have not witnessed this with Shaw. However, I recently installed a VOIP phone for my home office. Since then, I have noticed that my IP address is sometimes assigned from Ontario. Because my VOIP server is in Vancouver, this can cause latency. Not sure if this is a random coincidence, or if they purposefully try to degrade VOIP traffic so that they can sell you a phone line.

At a presentation from one of the CRTC commissioners today. American channels will still be possible under the basic plan with the new ruling. They couldn't really explicitly come out either way on it 'cause: 1. Canadian regulator shouldn't be mandating the carriage of US channels, 2: excluding them would eliminate simultaneous substitution (substitution of US adverts with Canadian adverts).

Simpson indicated that they are going to be issuing a ruling on wholesale internet distribution, which will ensure that there is a level-playing field for independent ISPs, so full bandwidth and at a price that they will be able to be competitive. There are more rulings to come following their 'Let's Talk TV' hearings.
