I live in Vancouver and I voted for Jim Green myself. I don't think he is that great as a candidate... but I think he was the best one running. Ultimately that is what democracy is: you have a responsibility to vote for the candidate that you think is best, out of the people that put their names forward. No sense crying about not having a perfect mayor.

I voted for a few other people in the other categories too, but I didn't max out my number of people I could vote for. I like Peter Ladner, so I voted for him for council... but mostly I wanted to not vote for all the dumb people like Ellen Woodsworth, Tim Louis, Fred Bass, David Cadman, etc. Fuck, I hope all the freakishly-far-left-wing people go away this time.

I also voted for the city to be able to borrow more money, the thing on the other side of the ballot. I think there is a risk, but the economy is doing well in B.C. right now and we need to invest in civic instrastructure while we can still afford it.

So how did you vote?

Surrey people... did you vote to punt McCallum?

as of 9:00 p.m., Jim Green in the lead

http://vancouver.ca/electionresults2005_wa/eresults2005.cfm

Jim Green - 5377
Sam Sullivan - 4660

On City Council... looks like we'll get:

ANTON, Suzanne NPA 4786
LADNER, Peter NPA 4778
STEVENSON, Tim VVN 4708
DEAL, Heather VVN 4657
CADMAN, David COPE 4634
LOUIE, Raymond P. VVN 4617
BASS, Fred COPE 4428
CHOW, George VVN 4349
CAPRI, Kim NPA 4158
HARRISON, Heather VVN 4126
LOUIS, Tim COPE 3957

Tim Louis is just hanging on right now... going in and out of the cut-off.

C'mon Vancouver! Give Tim Louis and his Maoist/Che Guevara bullshit the boot!

as of 9:30.... Sullivan is opening a lead

93 of 142 polls reporting....

SULLIVAN, Sam NPA - 38,834
GREEN, Jim VVN - 35,452

I wonder if the "James Green factor" is having an effect. The guy with the similar name has far too many votes for an also-ran candidate: 2,639. If Jim Green does lose, hopefully he loses by a greater margin than the number of votes James Green gets.

If you look at the map of the city... Sullivan is carrying most of the districts. It's basically just the lower East side, some of downtown and Kits that is going for Green.

On council.... COPE is being slaughtered... these are the people in the "eclected" postions right now:

ANTON, Suzanne NPA 37975
LADNER, Peter NPA 36128
CAPRI, Kim NPA 33065
LOUIE, Raymond P. VVN 32655
BALL, Elizabeth NPA 31936
CHOW, George VVN 31746
STEVENSON, Tim VVN 31740
LEE, B.C. NPA 31704
CADMAN, David COPE 31340
DEAL, Heather VVN 31116

David Cadman is the only COPE candidate in the top 10.

Fred Bass is close.

Tim Louis, Ellen Woodsworth and Anne Roberts are basically out of it... and good riddance!!! :D

Sam Sullivan is the new Mayor of Vancouver

Well... it's about 10:15... the hockey game is over (Oilers lost) and the Vancouver election is all over except for the cryin' and the beer drinkin'

with 141 of 142 polls reporting:

SULLIVAN, Sam NPA - 61,341
GREEN, Jim VVN - 57,123
GREEN, James - 4,232

HiFi, I like your ideas about idiot proofing the election process. It appears that the "James Green factor" may have decided the election. It probably doesn't make sense to count all his votes as misplaced Jim Green votes, but it really makes you wonder. Most of the other mayor candidates got 200-600 votes.

On council... COPE was reduced to a single seat:

ANTON, Suzanne NPA 60356
LADNER, Peter NPA 57948
CAPRI, Kim NPA 52465
LOUIE, Raymond P. VVN 52280
STEVENSON, Tim VVN 50979
BALL, Elizabeth NPA 50673
CHOW, George VVN 50611
CADMAN, David COPE 50549
DEAL, Heather VVN 50026
LEE, B.C. NPA 49892

Jim Green

This is the third time this guy has tried for mayor and lost. Hopefully he gets the message but I doubt that. As for COPE - those left wingers don't deserve to be on council. The people have spoken.

Could someone kindly explain to an ignorant American what the abbreviations COPE, VVN, and NPA signify, and what the parties stand for politically?

Conservatives Offer Pitiful Excuses?
Violent Vancouver Nihilists?
National Policemen's Alliance?

Honestly, I don't have a clue.

Coalition of Progressive Electors - the left wing party

Vision Vancouver - the new centre party

Non-partisan Association - the "right wing"/pro-business/pro-development party (which has traditionally controlled the mayor's office and council... the last 3 years with the COPE council has been an abberation)

Ugh! I totally forgot to vote. Well not exactly, I discovered you could only vote in your riding/constituency and I was Downtown for the most of the day. I got there too late.

As of right now, a difference of 3747 votes separate the two.

James Green got 4273 votes.

Would James Green have gotten 526 votes on his own without voter confusion?

We'll never know. But Pedro Mora, who walked around downtown wearing a handwritten sandwich board, has so far gotten 443 votes, so one has to expect James Green got more than 526 legitimate votes.

James Green is the Ralph Nader of Vancouver Municipal politics. Or maybe the Pat Buchanan. I dunno.

COPE = Committee of Progressive Electors
NPA = Non Partican Association
VVN = Vision

COPE had an internal war going for the past 3 years and split. The debt and the commies were left with COPE and Vision got to be debt free with the only mildly left wingers.

The NPA is the civic branch of the Liberal coalition government in Victoria. They range from middle to far right.

I agree with you on this one ghostie. My one main hope this election was to rid council of that asshat Tim Louis.

Thanks, Ghostie.
It's interesting to see how often the right tries to pass itself off as non-partisan or non-political. Happens in the US all the time.

The mere act of a group calling itself non partisan means they're partisan.

The 'James Green' factor

This is a non issue; anyone unable to figure out who they are voting for shouldn't count. If you are that stupid that you can not see the diff between 'Jim Green VV' and 'James Green indi.' why are you bothering to vote anyway?

You bet! I was thrilled that Dianne won. I had always found McCallum to be a pompous ass. I remember in his first term, he sent out an email to everyone in city hall that said in no uncertain terms that personal emails would not be tolerated, content was to be city business only. Awhile later, he sent one out to everyone again that announced that his son had a car for sale. A few people questioned the personal nature of it, he said that since he was the mayor, any email he sends out is city business. wtf? Arrogant prick.

I also didn't like his American style campaign of slagging the competition.
